A 3D exploration-focused metroidvania with first-person shooting mechanics and the first 3D entry in the Metroid series, Metroid Prime follows Samus Aran after the events of Metroid (1986) as she boards a Space Pirate frigate, then chases her escaping archrival Ridley into the intricately structured Tallon IV, a planet full of deadly wildlife and former home to the advanced and ancient Chozo race.

Sounds and looks great, has absolutely stood the test of time (havent tried the remaster). More backtracking than the 2D games but with the artifacts being obtainable at any time it helps minimize it.

This was Nintendo's first FPS, so it was bound to have some rough points. Despite being a heavy learning project, Metroid Prime is an an excellent game. I would recommend this game to people who want to build familiarity with FPS games, or if you prefer something less intense than other games in the genre. There are puzzle and platforming aspects of this game that make it the type of meditative experience people expect from Metroid, while also enough action and boss variation that comfortably turn Metroid into an FPS. The emphasis on lock-on combat might be a little confusing for some people, and I found it clumsy to manage combined with some of the expectations of the Flaahgra battle. Otherwise, it allows players to isolate targets and isn't a hassle to manage with some environmental awareness of other nearby enemies. One of this game's strongest points is the immersion in Chozo culture and history. No Metroid game (at the time of this review's publication), spends this much time introducing the player to what the Chozo believe, or why they do anything. The temples and spirits the player encounters give a lot of context for the series as a whole, and elaborate on the connection Samus has to the aliens who raised her. Mechanically, this game does a lot of things you might expect a Metroid FPS to do; every enemy has a weakness, and many enemies late in the game are best approached with a specific weapon upgrade. They are color-coded for easy visual reference, as are some puzzles associated with different weapons. Bosses, and some environments, will require extensive use of specific visors to understand the necessary approach for the situation. Not only does this game make the player think more about combat than other Metroid games, but it adds to the platforming with sections that are well articulated for the morph ball. These areas are separate from any amount of platform jumping, and have lesser enemies that are part of the puzzle more than they are an annoyance. Moving in and out of the morph ball can be a little clumsy during boss encounters, but it is something any player can adapt to. Upgrades and ammunition are hidden in as many places as anyone would expect in other Metroid games, with some optional weapon upgrades for anyone interested in advanced strategies. Old equipment is used inventively, and new items add greater scope to the Metroid experience. I especially enjoyed the return of the Spider Ball. The original control scheme of this game did not have the best controls for 3D movement, but they are not impossible to use. Standing in place to look around is common, and often necessary. One joystick to move is less of a hassle when the player remembers they can jump, and the environments tend to be wide open. The remake of course fixes these minor issues and changes none of what is great about this game. Metroid Prime is an introductory FPS with enough puzzle and environmental immersion to suit children and adults alike.

Metroid Prime really does deliver as the first 3D entry into the Metroid series as well as making it a huge landmark of gaming similar to Ocarina of Time for the Gamecube as it demonstrates why it was the best 1st party Nintendo title as the time with Samus exploring the depths of Tallon IV while incorporate a new scanning feature to dive into the story of what's really going on the planet.

My first experience with Metroid Prime was definitely a rough time. There are some real difficulty spikes and points where I got lost for over an hour, but that's just part of the experience. There's no rushing through this game on a first time playthrough. Anyone that knows this game remembers the pain of navigating the Phazon Mines for the first time. This game absolutely succeeded in bringing a 2D platformer into the 3D world though, which was quite a feat so growing pains were to be expected. All-in-all a really cool game with interesting story and great visuals. I would suggest anyone to at least give it a try.

Still plays great! Pioneering, moody, challenging - one of the greatest of its day, and an all-time classic.

God made us all equal... but when it's about jumping from a 2D platform game to a 3D platform game, some are more equal than others.
