The famous Metroid series lands on the Nintendo DS with Metroid Prime: Hunters. A once-strong race has gone extinct, leaving powerful artifacts to be found by bounty hunters from across the galaxy. The game features a variety of bounty hunters, both old and new, to the series. It also features multiple competitive game modes--such as deathmatch and king of the hill--for battling wirelessly with up to three other players.

An ambitious effort for a real-time 3D FPS to play on a DS. That being said, stylus controls were uncomfortable, story is pretty meh for a metroid game, and the visuals did not age well.

This had a fun story. If anything in the Metroid series has been unexplored, it is the idea of Samus have standalone adventures not tied to the main narrative. The control scheme is less absurd than you would think. You can use the touch screen to aim, but you can also set it so the D-Pad moves you and the ABXY buttons look around. I found this to be much easier, and it had minimal use of the touch screen. Whatever you prefer, there's a way to make it work. Sadly the escape sequences in this game are present seemingly as a formality to the series, and overused. There are two objects you need to retrieve from each location, and each time you get one there's an escape sequence. Whether it's instant death as your escaping, or wasting time in gun fights with enemies that move in erratic ways, the escape sequences are not done well. It defeats the purpose to have one when you have to return to the area immediately afterwards to explore it further, and there's no reason given for them when they show up. Eight escape sequences was a bad idea. The different hunters were fun to engage with, as they all fought somewhat different from each other. Some didn't shy away from going into their version of the Morph Ball. Occasionally they'd get stuck on a wall or object in this form, which can be fun to exploit for the player. The environments and exploration was pretty fun, and the Morph Ball sections felt like anything you'd expect from Metroid Prime. This game is pretty successful in terms of bringing Metroid Prime's ideas to the Nintendo DS, although reading the 3D map was a little difficult. I think they could have taken a simpler approach to the map display that would have worked just as well. Unfortunately, most of the upgrades you collect are a large departure from what Metroid is. As much fun as it was to have Samus with a sniper rifle, there's very little incentive to use them throughout most of the game. A few of them are good for bosses, or used to open doors to new areas. The setup of the game is pretty user-friendly, as you can save and restore Samus in her shape any time you want, and each location has teleport points that bring you between important points and your ship. You're never far from retaining any amount of progress, and some puzzles don't need to be solved a second time if you leave an area. Despite the of the functional and design qualities of the game, the combat and bosses can suffer. I would say there are eight main bosses, but in reality there are four versions of two bosses. Most of them are really aggravating to fight with limited time to hurt them, and they seem intent on eating time more than being interesting. If they don't move in strange ways that scarcely allow the player to hit them, then they waste time by forcing the player to continuously expose weak points, and waste further time by allowing almost no time to hurt them. I would have enjoyed more use of the special weapons to solve puzzles. One of the most fun parts of the game was the sniper laser puzzle in a room full of forcefields. (The solution isn't the most straightforward, because you have to be looking at the objects to notice they open and close depending on where you are in the room.) This game had a lot of potential, but I think the limitations the developers were working with caused them to make some hasty decisions to extend the game's length. Wasn't Metroid originally intended to be only a few hours long in the first place? I also can't help but think they wanted to have more weapons in the game. There's some unused symbols on a window near the last boss. All the symbols for the weapons are arranged in a certain order, but two extras show up at the end of the sequence. I've heard there is a mouse and keyboard adaptation for this game, which might make it more appealing to a wider audience. This game falls short of its potential, but I can't call it objectively bad. The last boss was pretty fun, although the secret last boss was unusually easy. Your hint to make the secret last boss show up isn't difficult to figure out, but you'll need to give yourself some time to think about the hints you're given and scan everything you can to find the answer.

Vaguely remember this story but I had a good time with this game. I really enjoyed the multiplayer and just jumping around and figuring out the little puzzles I encountered. The game was just awesome to experience. One day I'll get to play it again.
