I think this game was given to inexperienced developers, or a low effort team in the first place. Many objectives are not stated to the player at any time, the gods do not become stronger at any point, and they serve only to mitigate certain aspects of the game's mechanics or difficulty. The story is appropriately themed for the game's setting, but there are more dynamic Gameboy RPG stories than this. I'm pretty sure the defense stat is a formality. No matter how much I improved it, damage was stagnant throughout the whole game. There are so many great ideas here that do not live up to their potential. This game was disappointing, especially after playing the second NES game in this series.

This is one of the most competent 8bit RPGs I've played, and leagues ahead of the first game. Progression is fairly quick, exploration is user-friendly, the characters suit the theme, as well as being defined nicely in their combat roles. Leveling up does not take ages, the interface and menus are easy to read, and I liked the sprite art a lot. Data East was in top form here.
