Another one of my top favorites in the series. Really fun and satisfying gameplay with a few difficulty curves and challenging boss fights. I really love the suspenseful and darker atmosphere and setting of this game, not something you see too often from Nintendo first party games and something that felt like the foundations of what Dread would be like years later.

Overview: Samus embarks on her first "horror-esque" metroid game as she survives a devastating attack from an unknown creature and later has to face the same creatures all over again as they infest every known part of the B.S.L. Research Station. She is in for a rough time as she fights to take on a new evil. Everyone loves Metroid games, especially 2D and I cannot blame them. Historically they are some of the most graphically impressive and story rich games out there that also offer up smooth gameplay and a killer OST to boot. I have played this game many times but this review is based off my most recent playthrough. Gameplay: Anyone who has played a Metroid game knows that the game will be beautifully built for the most part. From graphic design all the way down to how Samus herself handles transformations to and from Morph Ball form and the killer boss fights that are dotted through it, that there will be a certain amount of back tracking thru the game as you revisit areas. This doesn't really subtract from the game, but more or less adds to the game. This game is harder than other 2D games I feel as the enemies do a staggering amount of damage, even on normal where fighting groups at once when at low health can prove to be challenging (looking at you Wasp). My one major complaint about the game is the last mission. The game locking you out of all the sectors and such to go and force you to fight the SA-X is not needed and should have let you finish exploring the station. Story: The story of Metroid Fusion is a dark one. Metroids inhabited SR388 and were all eliminated by Samus but then when a new threat emerges; she herself gets caught in it as she has to fight a life and death struggle against an unknown assailant. After surviving a horrific attack by the X and the local station orbiting SR388 suffers a catastrophic explosion; it is her duty to find out why. The story of the game is well thought out, as you discover bit by bit how smart the X truly are and their motives. Stopping at Navigation rooms constantly is a bit annoying, but the cutscenes add to the overall story of the game and can suck a new player in if they are interested in games of similar interest. Visuals: Yes, it is a dated game graphically, however the graphics then were amazing and to be honest, they hold up pretty well to today's standards. The colors are crisp and the monsters all look really good for the most part. My favorite monster was always the Core-X myself, I think they looked the best (specifically the Beam Core-X). The X parasites themselves looked cool too as a see-thru gelatinous blob, you can tell the devs put a lot of work in as they are semi-transparent (something you don't see in Dread for the most part minus the super tiny ones). Soundtrack: Every soundtrack in this game is great. Each one seems to inspire some type of feelings from the player as they match almost perfectly to their enviroments that they are in. Sector 1 and Sector 6 being the best ones in my opinion. Even the pre-boss fight music adds a creepy undertone to the entire area when you encounter it and you get a feeling of dread that something is going to happen soon. The soundtrack can really suck you in and are great to listen too even standalone without playing the game. Closing: Overall the game is a masterpiece and deserves to be played by more people (as well as Dread). The game is short so you do not need to invest a lot of time to it, but Metroid players who have not touched it or who have not touched it in a while should definitely pick it up again (and even play the Randomizer variant for a new, unique experience).

Un grand Metroid, beaucoup plus axรฉ sur l'histoire et sur l'ambiance que sur l'exploration. Limite horrifique par moments.

Metroid Fusion is really good. It's the most consistently good 2D Metroid game out of the ones I've played. It has actual well designed bosses, for the most part, an interesting story, and improved controls. Fusion is much more linear than the other games, but I didn't find this to be too constricting overall. It still has its "Metroid moment"s. Fusion is quite strict about where you're able to go at any one time. It's not afraid to lock doors to areas that aren't relevant to the current objective you've been given. Your travel around the map is dictated by an AI commanding officer, and for the most part you're required to go along with your directives. This felt a little suffocating at first, and I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of independent exploration. As ever though, the Metroid team sure know how to make a Metroid game. Fusion, despite the linearity, ends up feeling quite like every other Metroid in the end. The allowed path hits the same beats as the journey through the other games. Fusion still has the same feeling of progression. There's still moments of confusion - "Metroid moment"s - where it's kind of unclear where to go, but the linear progression largely makes it difficult to get lost. If getting lost is your absolute favourite thing about a Metroid game, you're only really given the opportunity to be lost a few times, so Fusion will probably disappoint. I really like the atmosphere in Fusion. The environments are really nice looking, and the music is great. Metroid Fusion does a really good job of foreshadowing a lot of its bosses, and excellently establishes the SA-X as a genuine threat that you're powerless against. The bosses in general are much better in Fusion than the previous games. They all have actual attack patterns, and generally don't involve just relying on a big stack of energy tanks. You can generally avoid most damage in the early fights, and they're pretty fun. As the game progresses though, the bosses regress. Nightmare feels impossible to beat without taking damage due to the position of its weak spot, and one of Samus's returning foes is fought in exactly the same way as previous games. I don't think they've done fights with them right ever, it's always just been a missile fest with a lot of damage being taken in-between. The small control tweaks make these fights a lot more manageable though. Missiles are now selected when holding R, and this makes using them much easier. You also don't have multiple missile types to cycle through this time - all upgrades apply to your standard missiles. This change does make aiming specifically diagonally up or down a bit more difficult though. L and R used to be used to aim up and down, and this has been changed to holding L and up or down. Metroid Fusion is pretty good, though it has its moments. The linearity makes it not for everyone, but I quite enjoyed it.
