Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem is a game with twelve(!) controllable characters who unravel the mysteries of human history over the last 2000 years. The story revolves around a young student named Alexandra Roivas. She travels to Rhode Island to investigate the mysterious death of her grandfather. But soon she discovers much more than she expected.
The game offers a unique sanity system that allows your character's emotions to affect you like never before. If you fail to defeat the monsters, your sanity meter will rise, triggering hallucinations that manifest in the “real world.” This sometimes leads to very confused “Huh?” moments, but at the same time it's presented in a very cool way.
An oppressive soundtrack and creepy, atmospheric sound effects draw you into the action. You try to piece together the story and face the dark forces while fighting monsters, while listening to atmospheric sounds and trying to survive.
This game really surprised me with its interesting story and sanity system. I've never seen another game that told a story in this way before (and the game is from 2002). The graphics were a bit washed out, of course, and the controls were a bit clunky at times, but I don't think that detracted from the story. A remake of this game with such a sanity system would certainly make many fans happy and definitely prompt us to tackle the game again 😁
