Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels is a direct sequel to Super Mario Bros. Not to be confused with the western Super Mario Bros. 2, this sequel to Super Mario Bros. is very much an expansion to the original, with many reused graphics and concepts, though new ones are also present. The game was initially released for the Japan-only Family Computer Disk System.

I've always seen this game as the birthplace of kaizo games. While Mario 2 has a tremendous amount of experimentation in level design and mechanics, there are aspects of this game that actively work against the player. Most of this game isn't terrible, but bear in mind I say that after over thirty years of playing video games. There are a few jumps that are precise and annoying, and the last level has two platforms you need to reach with the asinine idea of jumping and forcing your momentum to take you backwards. I didn't find the wind nearly as bothersome as other people seem to. This is a prime example of where game developers were not considering their primary audience: children. Someone in my Twitch audience brought up the idea of Japanese children liking this kind of challenge, which is a fair cultural consideration to keep in mind. Different cultures have different ideas about what is appropriate for children, even in video games. You can't trust mushrooms in the underground or castle levels. They are frequently death mushrooms, and I abandoned looking for them. I imagine this game was a great learning experience for developers, but the difficulty between this and the first Mario game is pretty steep. "The Lost Levels" will challenge you a lot more than other early Mario games. I used Luigi instead of Mario because I found the ability to jump higher to be extremely useful in many parts of the game. His floaty momentum might have contributed to my aggravation with level 8-4 and the backwards jumps.

6.5 I played this with Save States in-between levels which prob made me like it more than I would've normally. There are some dumb design choices difficulty wise that just feel like unfair trolls. It also is a pain that you have to beat the game 8 times to unlock the bonus A-D worlds.

https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1162518367 This game is BRUTAL. Still the hardest achievement set I've ever done with one of the hardest achievements I've ever accomplished C-4 Fire. This is like the start of Kaizo mario really, its SMB1 3rd quest pretty much. Highly recommend for the diehard mario fans out there.
