This game seems fun enough on the surface, but there is a point late in the game where the novelty is thrown away in favor of reinforcing the reputation NES games have. This game was never released in Japan, and intended to be appealing to westerners. The end result was somewhat condescending, starting with the player's weapon being a yoyo. Every village was named after soft drinks. Progression is guided and the mazes are simple enough for anyone to figure out. StarTropics comes off as a subdued and less complicated Legend Of Zelda. Puzzles and dungeons design is centered primarily on finding switches, walking through hidden passages, and avoiding traps. Movement is rather stiff. The character paused for a moment each time the player changes direction. It is not possible to jump forward unless landing on a block or platform. This puts the player at a horrible disadvantage while fighting enemies late in the game. Enemies will shoot three bullets at a time at the player, and attempting to jump over them results only in the player landing on the third bullet. This is made worse by these enemies constantly moving away from the player. The last boss moves and attacks at random, and instantly kills the player upon contact. The story is a lighthearted and fun science fiction adventure with a good sense of humour. Too bad that nothing else is terribly fun about this game.

I grew up playing this game and it still holds dear to me to this day. Always a good play again and again. Great music too. I doubt it will happen but if Nintendo reboots this series I would not be opposed.

I'm not sad I missed out on this game as a kid. I was loving every bit of it until the end. The difficulty went from fair to stupid, the last boss is a horrendously long battle, and it is possible to die instantly against the last boss. All the fun and silliness vanishes in the last chapter.

Really imaginative title, lots of fun to be had here. Definitely some thinkpieces when it comes to the puzzles though, yikes!
