One of my favorite action RPGs, and one of the most depressing games I've played. Fantastic story, good progression, great use of magic and weapons, and music that always fits the mood. The GBA remake changes the story to be less impactful. Prepare to be sad, because nothing good happens to anyone in this game. HP is completely rigged in the player's favor. It is impossible to not have 999HP.
Standard playthrough on Switch
Damn near perfect, especially for a GameBoy title. Also started the Mana franchise.

A bold blend of action and RPG, Final Fantasy Adventure delivers an impressive experience for the Game Boy. Real-time combat, deep mechanics, and a surprisingly emotional story set it apart from other handheld titles of its era. While clunky controls and vague objectives show its age, the memorable music and rich world more than make up for it.
Pros:
Real-time combat with RPG depth
Atmospheric world and great music
Ambitious story for its time
Cons:
– Clunky item/magic management
– Occasionally unclear progression
– Poor companion AI
Verdict:
A must-play for fans of retro action RPGs and the Mana series. Best enjoyed with patience — or a walkthrough.
