I apreciate this game in a lot of ways. The simple fact that this game even exists is enough for me to like it despite the issues it has. I'll split my thoughts into different sections. Gameplay --- While all the mechanics can seem a little intimidating on the surface level the game is actually very simple. It boils down to bringing an enemy's "health" down to a certain level, or 0, and then hitting them with a specific attack that takes away a number of "lives". It reminds me of Dissidia Final Fantasy's gameplay in the way that you build up enough "normal" damage to do "real" damage. If you've played Super Smash Bros, it's basically playing with stock lives. The worst character in the game is Chad (Sado). Anyone with long distance is top tier from a casual point of view. Presentation/Graphics --- This is specifically about the UI and graphics. The characters look great and I never thought we would ever get a Bleach game as good looking as this. I will still say though that Ichigo's face looked very off to me from the moment this game was announced. Something about how large his eyes are and how square his face is just don't look right. I eventually got used to it but I'll never forget how I kept wishing they would fix his face before the game came out. Everyone else looks great. The color change on Komamura was jarring though since he was depicted as orange in the original anime while this was changed to grey in TYBW. The attacks look great and landing finishing moves is satisfying. The menus are very stylish which was also a nice surprise. You can see that the devs wanted to make this as stylish as possible. Some parts of the story are presented through brand new art and it's very well done and beautiful. Story --- Sadly, this is the weakest part of the game and it really falls short in a lot of places, but at the same time I also really appreciate what they've done here. My mind immediately goes to the story presentation of Bleach Heat the Soul 6 (and 7) for the PSP. I remember being really excited and impressed that the PSP games did their best to have cutscenes and present all the story being covered. The way the story in Rebirth of Souls is presented feels exactly like how those PSP game scenes were done but in HD. However, that's where the problems come from. While I really appreciate how it tries cover everything from the anime, even small moments, it causes the pacing to suffer really badly. There also a lot of static camera angles and cutscenes (like the PSP games). It's ambitious as the game attempts to cover all the story from the beginning to the end of the fight with Aizen. I feel it's because of this that that presentation suffers as the budget had to be spread out to be able to cover everything. There are a few high quality scenes spread out and they are beautiful, and I wish the story was more condensed so that these scenes could have existed more frequently as they are missing in several key moments (i.e. Full Hollow Ichigo was done very cheaply). Even content that is skipped over in the 3D aspects is covered through the previously mentioned art presentation accompanied by narration. There is also some budget put into music video-esque scenes that act as pseudo-anime openings. I'll be honest... while these were neat I would have rather they just created one and used the budge for the others to improve the presentation for specific story moments. The extra stories were nice though and despite the overall presentation it is quite a lot of content. Music --- The music in this is great. From the title screen to the end credits all the music in this is really fun to listen to. The character's having individual tracks play when going into Awakening mode is also a really nice touch. Urahara's track slaps and is the best one imo. There is one particular track that sounded strangley similar to a track from Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII and I couldn't shake off the thought that it might be the same composer every time I heard it. Overall great music. FINAL --- I love that this game exists and am so glad to see all the hard work the devs put into it. They were clearly very passionate about this game and had a clear vision of what they wanted to do. I wish they had been given more budget as I'm positive the game's shortcomings are not their fault. At least not entirely. Had the story mode's presentation been ramped up this could have been one of the best anime fighter games to exist. Bleach finally getting a proper game like this is a dream come true.
