While there are people who think this game is some pinnacle and every other SMT game that's not Nocturne is garbage, I am not one of them. I feel very eh about this game, to be honest. I didn't hate it, but I can't say it's the masterpiece some people tout it as. The story was...well, at first, I didn't care much about it. It got interesting in the second half once the Krypto chip stuff and the "souls being stolen" plot began to happen, but before that, I will admit I wasn't very invested in the story. I did enjoy the Spookies, even if they weren't involved in fighting, they still did things that aided the MC in doing things. The main things I wasn't a fan of however is primarily gameplay related, and it's mostly to do with the loyalty system, which can just be cheesed anyway with gifts and changing the demon's personality temporarily. Sure, I get it, MC's new at the whole "demon summoning" game, but to have certain actions not done because of the demon deciding to do something else got annoying in the earlygame. Second was Magnetite, which ends up becoming a borderline non issue once you learn the game doesn't want you running around and fighting random encounters with a full party. This comes with it's own risks, but if you dump your level up points into boosting MC's HP, the only fear is instant kill moves. And while I am guilty of exploiting this, once you gain access to Tetrakarn and Makarakarn, it's over. Barring Almighty, you can literally give regular encounters and even some bosses the middle finger. Low cost and can outright shut down enemies that only have phys or magic attacks. Speed becomes the only main factor. I do know that in New Game+, there's another ending, but if I ever have to replay the overly long and full of instant kill Amami Monolith, it'd be too soon. That dungeon sucks. It's way too long and filled to the brim with annoying enemies. I will admit I did like the concept of a secret organization of demon summoners, though. That was pretty interesting.

I finished this game out of pure determination and I was rewarded the simple knowledge that this wasn't worth my time in the slightest

Coming off the presses of Strange Journey I was excited to dive into another SMT title, so I was happy to find out this game was getting a remake on the 3DS! While a bit more archaic, it being an older game, it was none the less compelling and I suppose my first real taste of classic SMT. As a dungeon crawler I think I actually enjoyed it a bit more than SJ, as it's difficulty felt a tad more forgiving. Still, be prepared for it to get brutally difficult the further you get into it.
