Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights is a third person platform game with action elements that was developed by Heavy Iron Studios and published by THQ for the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Xbox consoles. The game was first released on May 20, 2002 in North America and was released later that year in PAL regions. It is the first Scooby-Doo! video game title to come to sixth generation consoles. The game became a Greatest Hits title in 2003.[1] The game had a follow up titled Scooby Doo: Mystery Mayhem. The game puts players in the control of Scooby-Doo in a story that revolves around him searching for the rest of the gang around a haunted mansion after they're kidnapped by an eccentric villain. The game has twelve areas, ranging from graveyards and secret labs to fishing villages and haunted mazes. The game received mixed reviews from critics, mainly criticizing the game's simplicity, although its massive environments staying true to the Scooby-Doo! universe was praised by critics and fans alike. Fans of the original show loved the game, feeling it was compensation for the N64 game released in 2000. The game also marks the first and only time Don Knotts did voice work for a video game, though he did do previous voice work in the Scooby-Doo universe.[2]

Not a great game, but not terrible either. It has plenty of frustrating things for trying to 100% it or navigate the game world effectively, but it's also a proper Metroidvania game with a handful of platforming challenges. That said, it's a kid's game and the challenge level overall isn't very high, and the majority of the game is just BS for the sake of it. Played for achievements.

Gameplay is a 3D restrictive platformer. You're given certain pathways and areas you can wander around to your heart's content, bashing or jumping on monsters to get rid of them or jumping on beds and swinging on chandeliers. Story is simple Scooby Doo: Some person has disappeared in a mysterious haunted mansion and the gang tries to search for clues but then all get captured save for Scooby, who has to traverse the neighborhood to find his friends and help solve the mystery. It's a little odd in a good chunk of the game to where you're not really given much of the story other than "Here's places to explore and upgrades to find" until you get to the second or third boss battle, which is pretty late in the game. The visuals still hold up after 20 years! I was commenting on how good the graphics were while I was streaming the game, and I love how much effort and love was put into the game, even to render the full opening theme in the game engine / same visual style. Soundtrack is still pretty dope and memorable. I found myself humming the different tracks around the game map as I played and the classic studio audience laughter when something remotely silly happens or is commented on in game. Nostalgic blast from the past! Not perfect, but a good game.

This was a special pick for Halloween to play throughout the month of October 2021, along with a special thematic layout I had used for my channel. An adorable game that definitely belongs in this series, and the community loved it, though the clunky 19-year old controls were a little frustrating at times, on top of being awkward on a controller already. Odds are this one will collect dust until I decide to pull it back out for the October spirit at some point in the future.
