Magicka is a satirical action-adventure game set in a rich fantasy world based on Norse mythology. The player assumes the role of a wizard from a sacred order tasked with stopping an evil sorcerer who has thrown the world into turmoil, his foul creations besieging the forces of good. Players will be able to combine elements to cast spells, wreaking havoc and devastation on the minions of darkness. They will also be able to team up with friends and fight their way through the campaign, or test their skills in the magickal arts through other challenging modes.

I had a lot of fun playing Magicka with my friend. We ended up killing each other a lot...on accident and on purpose. It did get a little overwhelming trying to remember all of the different spell combinations as well. There were some spots in the game where we got pretty frustrated but overall I think Magicka is a great action RPG game especially with friends.

B | The indie action adventure title “Magicka” was a very, very fun little game to play on stream. It was another suggestion from the stream community and I had never heard of it before, and I was able to play through the story as a 4-player co-op. Well, with some challenges…
Here’s the deal – The game is broken, at least right now in the version I/we played. It was originally released in 2012 and I’ve read reports it had a lot of bugs, glitches, and crashes back then. In fact, the game pokes fun at these issues by allowing players to choose two pieces of equipment – the Patched Robe and Bugged Staff – for use from the beginning of the game. I figured playing it nearly 11 years later would mean these issues were mostly solved. Unfortunately, we got in too late, and a recent steam update has forced the game into a nearly unplayable state. With some patching and downgrading we got it to work, mostly. We still had to reload the game (usually multiple times) after completing a level, but with some tenacity we made it to the end of the game. If I were reviewing the game solely on its technical issues it would be awful, but I don’t feel like it’s fair to sink the game to the bottom of the barrel especially when it was reportedly more of an outside issue with steam. Still, if you are someone who reads a review like this to determine whether or not you want to try out a game, it’s worth mentioning that as of late 2023/early 2024, the steam version is near-unplayable.
Outside of these technical issues, I really liked the game. It’s got a wonderful game play loop that is both engaging and stimulating. The simple concept of having 8-10 base elements and being able to combine them to mix and create your own spells is such a refreshing take on a magic system and makes for an extremely enjoyable time. The art style of the game is like an amalgamation of caricature or chibi, but with these beautifully detailed backgrounds and eye-popping spell effects. It’s extremely effective and serves to easily blend both the humor and action elements of the experience. The writing is really funny and all of the references to other popular fantasy media never got old, likely because I found the gibberish language so charming and the game wasn’t really long enough to overstay its welcome. Finally, the chaos of the multiplayer experience was a wonder to behold. Everyone and everything was on a seemingly equal playing field – Players and monsters could kill each other in brutal and fantastical ways. Player versus monster, monster versus player, player versus player, monster versus monster… It was a blast just embracing the chaos and watching everything, myself included, explode into a million pieces all over the screen.
Were the game not currently broken on steam I’d almost say it’s a must-play for anyone looking for a really fun and relatively easy-to-pick up co-op experience. However, I’d give it a little while to (hopefully) have the kinks get worked out. These technical issues are why we opted not to play the DLCs. Hopefully we can get together one of these days and tackle the sequel!
Special thank you to Ezlas, Vofolok, and TerryWoodini for playing the game with me during this 2023 Holiday season :)
Super chaotic fun with friends.
