Grapple Dog is a game that I'm personally conflicted about, but that I think others will enjoy a lot. My biggest critiques are that there's not more music, and the gameplay feels a bit off at times or at odds with the level design. All the music in this game is so good, but there seems to only be like 1 track per world and that sucks. The gameplay is fun when it works. You swing from your grappling hook and bounce on enemies. That's about it. There's no power ups ot weapons or anything else other than some level gimmicks like air currents or floating balls of water that you have to jump from one to the other. The grappling and swinging feels great. What sucks, for me, is that you're clearly supposed to swing and bounce on enemies in a certain flowy way and it's hard to get the hang of that because the enemies hurtboxes are so small, sometimes, even when you're touching, if you're not directly in the middle, you will not bounce off the enemy leaving you next to them to be hit OR in a lava pit. I understand that this is a skill issue, but personally I think the game would be so much more fun if it was just a little bit more generous with the hurt boxes/hit boxes. Next is the level design, which needled me in the same way. For the most part the level design was awesome and really fun to go through, but then there'd be these moments where it seems like you should be swinging fast and getting into a flow state only to then be abruptly interrupted by an enemy or obstacle that you could not have seen coming unless you were going unreasonably slow. It felt so bad to be interrupted while I was having fun like this. Another great example of this was in a later level in the last world, there's a gem (which you need several of to progress), that is blocked off by a gate. Leading up to said gate is a trail of balloons that you can grapple to, but pop right after you grapple to them. To open the gate you have to hit a button a little ways away that is behind a grappling platforming section. Once you've done the section, you can go back and grapple up the ballons to get the gem. Here's the kicker; once you grapple up the 3 balloons, the gem is JUST out of reach, which makes you fall down and have to redo at least a portion of the balloon grapples again. The intended way to get this gem seems to be to grapple up and then wall jump after. This is such a SMALL thing and it's not hard to do at all. But this game is littered with this kind of stuff and it made me feel like wither the dev thought they were clever for this or thought it added a bit of a challenge or maybe they just didn't fix those parts. It's really frustrating after a while doing the main portion of something and then still having to work for the reward at the very end. It feels like you just won a race and then when you're supposed to be presented with a medal the person presenting it holds it just out of reach and makes you jump to get it. Which kind of sounds funny or like not that big of a deal, but when it happens over and over and over again you get sick of it... All that being said, the characters are charming, artstyle is gorgeous, and the music is BUMPIN. I think that there's people who will LOVE this game and just call me a hater, which is fair. I just didn't personally click with it.

It is way too much of a grind near the end. The level difficulty spikes in the last chapter and the game is a slog to go through, which is a shame because everything leading up to that point is a treat.

A 2D platformer that truly stands out from the crowd. Fun, funky, fluid, and just enough challenge to keep you on your toes.
