All of the games in this collection really allow you to appreciate how far Dragon Quest has come as a game series and to appreciate the influences Dragon Quest 1-3 gave the gaming world. They are 100% worth a playthrough for the sheer fact of their impact in the game sphere to gain further appreciation how far we've come. Dragon Quest 1 - The first and solid foundation to all upcoming DQ games. It's simple but fun. It definitely comes off "bare bones" in comparison to even 2 and 3 let alone more recent titles, but is easy to appreciate as without it the rest couldn't have existed as they do today. Dragon Quest 2 - The leap in quality and expansion between 1 and 2 is remarkable. This is the first instance of DQ having more than one party member. The three main characters are all related to the DQ1 hero as well and it is fascinating to see what features they have taken from their ancestral hero. Unfortunately, due to some rush in the development of the original game, there is a huge difficulty spike towards the end of the game that requires a fair amount of grinding to get to where you need to be. This was fixed some in this version as well as a few other features. This is also a treat to play after or before playing Dragon Quest Builders 2 as a lot of the easter eggs in that game are from DQ2 and will be OH SNAP moments of joy. Dragon Quest 3 - The first instance of class changing in DQ and gaming. This game was an incredibly heavy influence in the gaming world. The world building started in DQ2, but DQ3 goes even further beyond. Its world is huge and expansion. There is a lot of optional content as well, but well worth the exploration as DQ3's story and world are very interesting and fun to learn about! My biggest gripe with the game is the amount of GRINDING that is needed... The class changing system is awesome, but not perfect being the first instance and all. Characters who class change restart at level 1 and if you want to go back that level will also restart at level 1. It's can be worth the grind though for the simple fact class abilities carry over from each class change into the next. However, as result it is grind heavy. It's probably the one aspect I did not enjoy about DQ3. I'm intriuged though to see how the 2D-3D remake improves on these systems and if the world building and story also get a boost. Overall, I love Dragon Quest and experiencing these three games only has given me further appreciation for how far it has come as a series and gaming as a whole.
