Doom 64 for the PC port is a game to be treasured just like the classic Doom experience with it's maze level design and multiple gun selections while tearing through the demon horde that tried to invade Earth.

DOOM 64 is "DOOM 3" in my eyes, carrying on from Doom 2 and ending on a note that leads into the modern Doom games. It’s an underrated classic with much darker visuals and designs, as well as spooky, uneasy music. But at its core, it's still a DOOM game when it comes to gameplay. It doesn’t go as deep into horror as the official DOOM 3, but it still evokes darkness and dread. Highly recommend.

It's alright, but I don't think I enjoyed it quite as much as Doom 1 and 2. The visual upgrade is cool, and it is just a separate game, glad that it is preserved on PC as well now.

I'm really glad that Doom 64 was re-released. It's generally pretty solid, and I enjoyed it a lot. It feels like a nice in-between of Doom 1 & 2 and Doom 3. It's atmospheric, somewhat tense, but still follows the classic formula found in 1 and 2. That said, it absolutely has its flaws. It's so incredibly easy to get lost in Doom 64, and one of the required puzzles genuinely feels like it's only in the game to sell strategy guides. The final level is also frustratingly difficult. The final boss is like nothing else that has appeared in the game prior, as it shoots incredibly hard to dodge homing missiles at you while also shooting out fire. I would absolutely not have beaten it if I hadn't made a save at the beginning of the level and if I didn't then save scum extensively during it. It's far easier if you complete some secret levels found earlier in the game, but the best strategy for beating the final boss of a level based game should not ever be "you should have done better earlier on" when there's no way to go back without restarting. The game also has a number of inescapable traps, and nothing about these feel good. Most traps *are* escapable, but the few that aren't feel terrible. I played this primarily on Switch, and saw a disappointing amount of frame drops. Others online seem to claim that it runs perfectly smooth, but I didn't have this experience at all. The drops were nauseatingly jarring at times. I'm not sure if this is just my Switch getting on in age or if this port is genuinely that poorly programmed. I'm inclined to think it's maybe the former given what everyone else has said but it may genuinely just be the game. I think the head bob also contributes to the motion sickness that I felt at times when playing, and it's a huge shame there's no option to turn this off in the remaster. I swapped over to PC for the new "Lost Levels" - a new chapter, accessible once you beat the game - and still felt some slowdown, despite the frame time graph appearing to be a locked 144 FPS. Not really sure what's going on with that. The Lost Levels are a fun addition, and feel quite in-line with those of the base game, minus the frustrating traps. The final level of these isn't challenging whatsoever, in a bit of an overcorrection from the base game, but it also feels more like a victory lap map than a culmination of the Doom 64 campaign, or even these new levels. You're given every weapon in the game - including the fully upgraded Unmakyr - and practically unlimited ammo. It's fun, but a tad bit underwhelming. The save system in this port is made more in-line with the classic games - allowing you to save everywhere - which is a nice change. It still retains the password system from the original though, allowing you to optionally use these to save and load your progress if you'd like. These passwords are cross-platform, including with the original N64 version, and allowed me to swap between Switch to PC - as mentioned above - pretty seamlessly. Doom 64 has its charms and absolutely has its flaws. There's a lot to like, and a few things to very much dislike. It's worth a playthrough, but probably not at anything higher than the "Bring it on!" difficulty, at least on controller. Even then, expect the possibility of the final boss being unbeatable. This new re-release is neat, and the new levels are great.

Watch my full playthrough here - https://www.twitch.tv/collections/0b7C09fy2xc8Zw B | DOOM 64 was a dark, atmospheric, and unique entry into the DOOM series. Following Final DOOM it was developed by Midway Studios San Diego (under the supervision of Id Software, of course) and released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997. In my view it makes up one half of the “middle DOOM children,” the other half being DOOM 3. These two games are often noted for their darker takes on DOOM, leaning more into the horror and even a little of the “survival” aspect of FPS games. I’d say overall DOOM 64 hits more often than it misses and I really enjoyed revisiting it all these years later...
