I really wanted to like Chants of Sennaar. The premise feels so interesting; knowing nothing and figuring out what languages mean based off of person or environmental interactions, with extra layers like translation or conversations. Having multiple symbol-based languages with different sets of rules for concepts like plurality or pronouns is great enough from a puzzle solving and linguistic aspect. But they go further, with languages themselves are coated with different focuses and patterns which demonstrate the values of each society and how that grew in the language. The devs put so much thought into the subtle mechanics of the game, but they really failed in the blatant mechanics. The main issue with the game is that the whole gameplay loop lacks satisfaction. Mentally mapping out the different villager wants or situations to figure out what you're able to do next to satisfy one of these "quests" doesn't give extra fulfillment to sleuthing out where to go next or what puzzle to tackle next. Puzzles are either bland like please look here or please move pieces of the environment, or have potential like please understand these words. But understanding words are what you're doing the entire game and the puzzles of understanding them in an environment don't feel different cognitively than understanding them in a villager conversation. It's frustrating because to me, understanding the words themselves aren't enough of an incentive to continue, because the game presents as very sterile to reinforce this gameplay mechanic, the game doesn't offer me anything else to keep me going. I know other people feel like the villager interactions give enough and a different gameplay satisfaction compared to puzzle and environmental solving, but it just doesn't to me. Also I think most people don't enjoy the stealth sections.

Chants of Senaar is a great puzzle game where the central puzzles revolve around deciphering languages. It executes on this central concept well, and the presentation is brilliant, but a few things here and there bring it down somewhat. While Chants of Senaar revolves around deciphering languages, this task is only as hard as you make it. As with Return of the Obra Dinn, Chants of Senaar includes a journal, where you can make guesses as to the meanings of a symbol. Once you get a collection of these correct, the journal codifies the correct wording of each symbol. The journal is blank until the game decides that you have enough clues to ascertain the meaning of symbols, where pictures are then drawn, with slots to place your symbol's guess alongside these. I found that these drawings often appeared too quickly - giving me significant clues as to the meanings of words I was so far unsure of. The meanings of symbols are gleamed from conversations, and often from the environment. The latter are often extremely explicit, to the point that they feel somewhat bizarre. Murals are accompanied by symbols that describe them, and some objects are inscribed with their names; much of the world is explicitly labelled. This often results in a word you've been spending some time deciphering the meaning of via conversations being explicitly told to you around the next corner. This resulted in me leaving most of the deciphering for until I'd finished exploring each area, which was unsatisfying but efficient. The oft appearing journal, and the explicitly labelled objects does keep the pace of Chants of Senaar relatively brisk, but there were times where I'd have appreciated the game trusting in my ability a bit more. I appreciate that the game is likely attempting to cast a larger net and appeal to those who don't have the patience to engage with its mechanics, but I'd have maybe liked an option to swap to a less guided mode. I really have nothing but praise for the actual symbols in the game though. There's patterns in each language that you can recognise, and you can often use similarities between symbols to ascertain the general meaning of another prior to being shown it in sufficient context. This is one of the possible ways you can be sure of a word's meaning without seeing a 'necessary' clue though - allowing you to progress through the game without the journal drawing a new page, and your guess remaining unconfirmed. Quite possibly my biggest issue with the game is the forced stealth sections though. Being forced to blend in with the citizens is a nice idea, but you're often forced to sneak past watchers in a time sensitive manner, which is completely incongruous to the rest of the game. I did not enjoy a single one of these sections. Chants of Senaar executes on and presents its core concept well. It's undoubtedly a successful implementation of the idea, but I can't help but feel as though it had greater potential. It's absolutely worth playing, but it's perhaps not as deep as just hearing about the concept may make it seem. It scratched a certain itch for me regardless though, and I liked it a lot.

Der Turmbau zu Babel als Spiel - So oder so ähnlich könnte man Chants of Sennaar beschreiben. Man startet als unwissender Kapuzenmann in ein Abenteuer, in dem es alsbald um die Erklimmung eines Turmes geht. Zumindest scheint das aus den Reliefbildern hervorzugehen, die euch auf dem Weg zuerst begegnen. Menschen mit lustigen Mützen werden von Menschen mit anderen lustigen Mützen weggescheucht? Das Spiel stellt euch bewusst vor diese Verständnisprobleme, denn der Kern des Gameplays liegt im Verstehen lernen. So begegnet ihr nacheinander fünf verschiedenen Völkern beim Besteigen des Turms, welche allesamt eine eigene Sprache sprechen und die anderen nicht verstehen. Sprachen mit fremden Schriftzeichen für die gleichen Wörter, teilweise anderen Vokabeln und stellenweise auch eigener Syntax. Nichts wildes - man muss kein Sprachwissenschaftler sein - aber so hat zum Beispiel ein Volk die Eigenart, den Plural durch die Wiederholung eines Schriftzeichens anzugeben, während andere Völker vielleicht ein eigenes Zeichen für den Plural haben. Hin und wieder tauchen auch Rosettastein-artige Übersetzungshilfen für einzelne Wörter auf, die euch auf dem Weg zum Verständnis helfen. Bis die Worte auf einer festen Definition einrasten, ermöglicht euch das Spiel zudem, eine Art Arbeitsübersetzung anzulegen, die dann zusätzlich zum Zeichen in Dialogen angezeigt wird, um euch bei der Deutung eurer Gegenüber zu helfen.

Прекрасная головоломка не похожая на другие. Дешифровка делает игру увлекательной и не похожей на остальные головоломки. У меня остался лишь один вопрос к игре - это концепция проекта Исход, но в целом, даже её готова принять 😅 Хотя сам уровень не понравился вовсе. Игра оставляет много загадок и вопросов после прохождения, что тоже радует.

На жаль, не моя гра. Надто не зайшов геймплей. Дещо не зрозумілі загадки, і надто затягнуто все. Концепція гарна, але, ймовірно, не моя, бо хотілося спати під час проходження) Музики толком нема, історія є, але нічого неймовірного я в ній не знайшов.

Me esperaba que me fuese a gustar pero jamás imaginé que un juego cuya mecánica principal es traducir para poder avanzar fuese a ser tan bonito y tan bien hecho como para que no se te haga pesado en ningún momento. Visualmente el diseño de cada ciudad es increíble pero es que está todo perfectamente pensado con los idiomas inventados para que a pesar de ser diferentes al final te acabes sintiendo Duolingo con el poder absoluto de la lengua ayudando a todo cristo traduciendo. Si te gustan los juegos de puzles que no te lo den todo mascado, con una banda sonora y unos visuales bien lindos y que te ofrezcan mecánicas únicas está más que recomendado (a mi me gustó más de lo que me pensaba, fue un vicio) ❤️
