A remaster of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night included in the "Castlevania Requiem" collection. Experience Symphony of the Night remastered to 4K/1080p, with optional rendering options such as image-smoothing. This remaster is based on Symphony of the Night's expanded re-release for Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles. Featuring ground-breaking non-linear gameplay, Symphony of the Night helped define a new genre of gameplay by blending RPG elements, exploration and platforming. The vast number of weapons and items found throughout the game allows a diverse range of play styles to be employed. This game perfected the essence of the Castlevania series with gorgeous artwork and classic soundtrack that carry the player through the game.

It's crazy to think that this game came out in 1997 - it's aged incredibly well. There's a small amount of obtuse puzzles, and like most Metroid games it has largely underwhelming bosses, but it's overall hard to deny the fantastic design of Symphony of the Night. Unfortunately, after receiving and using the glasses of truth, the quality of the game decreases somewhat. The level design becomes less thought out which is understandable given why, but it's still unfortunate. Initially - to be honest - this part is a bit bullshit, as the game has a tendency to throw frustrating combinations of enemies into the same room. Over time though, after finding better weapons or levelling up, this second half of the game feels like more of a victory run of the castle, akin to collecting all the artifacts in Metroid Prime, but more engaging. Despite its various flaws, this game absolutely deserved to pioneer a genre. Progression feels rewarding, navigation forces the player to weigh up their best routes, and Dracula's castle is surprisingly atmospheric. It might be objectively worse than its contemporaries (which wouldn't exist without it) but it's still the most fun I've had in a Metroidvania game.
