Step into the shadows of the deadliest dwelling on earth. You've arrived at Castlevania, and you're here on business: To destroy forever the Curse of the Evil Count. Unfortunately, everybody's home this evening. Bats, ghosts, every kind of creature you can imagine. You'll find 'em all over the place, if they don't find you first. Because you've got to get through six monstrous floors before you even meet up with the Master of the House. Your Magic Whip will help, and you'll probably find a weapons or two along the way. But once you make it to the tower, you can count on a Duel to the Death. The Count has waited 100 years for a rematch.

This game really holds up as its own unique thing. I definitely prefer the Iga- or Metroid-vania iterations more but this game is really fun on its own. Something that I guess I subliminally realized but was crystallized when I listened to the Cane and Rinse episode was the difference in movement and jumping in this game versus its newer incarnations. In these classic Castlevanias you have to commit to your jumps before you make them and you don't have a lot of control after that point, whereas the newer games reward you for having good twitch reflexes and being able to react quickly to obstacles and enemies - a big strength of mine. Therefore, I really like to play the newer ones but I can appreciate this one on its own.
This is a surprisingly complete NES game on a system that often feels like it is housing just the alpha or beta versions of SNES games. The music is stellar and still carries forward to this day. The layout of most of the levels was interesting and well-done. This is an enjoyable game, apparently with an Easy mode that really makes it a lot more beatable by taking away the knockback from enemy hits, that I believe is worth playing but not something I plan to devote a ton of time to perfecting.
Used to speedrun this game had a 11:3X (Any%)
This is certainly much more tolerable than other infamous NES troll games. I like this game a lot, and it has just enough challenge to make you want more without making you feel like you're wasting your time.

Nem imaginava que o inimigo mais complicado desse jogo seriam as escadas.
