Full disclosure, I've never seen the Bakugan anime nor have I played the physical game that uses the magnetic cards and monster balls. I do know enough about Bakugan to understand the basis however; it's largely a game of "bigger number wins". Fans of Bakugan might take something away from this, but for me it was quite repetitive. There are some varied arenas that you play your cards and monsters on but many of these arenas feature layouts and hazards that are simply just not fun to play on. The power balance is also incredibly broken on certain stages too (the Earth element arena is absolutely littered with powerups whereas the others seem to be more sparse, for example). There's also an element of power creep where the monsters you get at the beginning of the game will basically be of no use at the end of the game because by that point the new ones you've unlocked will have base stats that far surpass your starters even if you've leveled them up to the maximum. It makes investing in the monsters tedious because even if you respec your stats you DON'T get your money back when you reset to level 1. You only get 6 cards in your deck and 3 monsters to use, so deckbuilding is very brief but surprisingly there is a lot of depth to it. Certain colors of cards all do certain things and many of them also have specific effects that benefit either one Bakugan individually or an entire elemental type. There are also effects that are triggered by various conditions such as who landed on the card first, who is currently in the lead, etc. The AI doesn't seem to "get" these strategies even on the hardest difficulty but as I played this game I was told multiple times by viewers that these special card conditions really add some depth to the multiplayer angle. I didn't have a human opponent to play against, but I can absolutely see how you could devise strategies to use certain cards as "traps" that penalize certain monsters or elements. Battles are done via minigames and there's only three different ones. There's a lot of grinding involved in this game so the lack of variety with the minigames does get bothersome after a while. Half of the cards in your deck can be played prior to these battles to boost your energy points or help stack the odds in your favor, but the AI can also play cards of their own to steal your items, reduce your power, or juice up their own guys to match yours. Again, another nice element of strategy here and I'm sure it's made better with human opponents as the AI is incredibly easy to read as to whether or not they will play bonus cards (if they are down by more than 50 points they will boost their stats, and if you have an item they will steal or destroy it if they have a card that lets them do that). The voice cast from the cartoon reprises their roles here and, from what I'd picked up from viewers who'd also seen the show, they do a fair job. It's always a plus when the actual VA's get hired to be in the game(s) based on the shows they've worked on, even if the games themselves aren't particularly good their performances to elevate the experience a bit. In-game graphics are fine, the monsters look cool when their holograms appear from the thrown balls even if the actual balls themselves look kind of silly. All in all, Battle Brawlers isn't bad, but unless you're already a fan of Bakugan this game probably isn't for you. It certainly doesn't do much to sell you on the IP's appeal.

cool, story is really bad, characters are really bad, but the game itself is fun for the child that i was. even nowadays its not that bad.
