In the 3DS version of Sonic Generations, Modern Sonic's gameplay is similar to that of Sonic Rush and the DS version of Sonic Colors. He has the Boost, the ability to slide under obstacles, jump off walls, and the Homing Attack. After the second era, Modern Sonic learns the Stomp. Modern Sonic's levels use the 3D effect of depth on the 3DS version more actively as well as to giving a better view for when Modern Sonic jumps into the background, although the console versions are 3D-TV compatible. In the HD version, Modern Sonic is only able to wall jump off certain panels (similar to the DS version of Sonic Colors), but in the 3DS version, he is able to wall jump on any wall (much like Sonic Unleashed and the Wii version of Sonic Colors).

I genuinely think Sonic Generations 3DS is one of the most consistently good Sonic games, and this is apparently a wildly unpopular opinion. It's clearly a lower budget title - as evidenced by the length of the game - and many of the stages are wholly ripped from their game of origin, but as a best-of 2D Sonic it's incredibly fun to play and replay. It does somewhat get the scraps of Generations console - as only Green Hill Zone is repeated between the two - and it's kind of unfortunate it doesn't feature any levels from Advance, but there's a reason why the zones used here are so well-liked in the games they came from. Generations 3DS is a pretty impressive companion game to the console version, and I genuinely think both modern and classic Sonic control far better in this game than in its bigger budget brother. Changing air direction through boosting is far more responsive in this version, and classic Sonic feels far more accurate to the Genesis/Mega Drive games. Generations may barely alter the level design of the 2D levels that it takes from Sonic's history, but it does a great job of re-creating the aesthetics of these in full 3D, and really takes advantage of this through its dynamic camera. Sure, you're probably better off booting up the individual stages included in the games they're taken from, but you're forced to play through some quite poor stages to reach many of these. Generations 3DS effectively trims the fat of these classic titles, though it also adds some less egregious fat of its own. Though I did say Generations 3DS was a best-of 2D Sonic, some zones are taken from Sonic's 3D outings - Adventure 1 and 2. These stages aim to re-create these 3D stages in 2D as accurately as possible, and this means they're the low point of the game. There's some bizarre design choices in these levels - though I never think the design particularly drops to more than just not great - and I wish they'd been replaced by other stages from past 2D games. Rush Adventure and all of the Advance games aren't represented here, and I think they could do with being. While it's a bit disappointing no entirely new levels were created for Generations 3DS, playing through some of the old games zones with boost and homing attack is pretty fun. I don't think it's particularly clear that the level design wasn't made with them in mind, and I've always liked them quite a lot, despite the fact that they really work to minimise the importance of momentum. Classic Sonic's physics not being entirely accurate does mean some parts of the levels that were originally intended to flow together don't do so as smoothly, but again, I don't think this is really that significant. I'd like to have seen Dimps attempt to keep classic Sonic sans homing attack, but I'm not that fussed that they gave him it close to the start of the game. I was never really that interested in the whole "two styles of Sonic" thing, especially when modern Sonic in Generations was primarily 2D anyways. I also think modern Sonic could've done with getting the stomp much earlier in the game, as it would've helped him control more responsively. I've seen a lot of people criticise how this game feels, but aside from the above and the game being 30FPS (though what can you expect from the 3DS) I don't really see why people do this. I think it controls pretty well, and I enjoy how it feels far more than any of the 2D portions of the recent 3D games. I first played Generations 3DS about a decade ago, closer to when it released, and I think that might be kind of clear in how much I've said "I don't really like this, but I don't really mind". As much as I'd like to approach this game more objectively, I'm not sure if I'll really be able to. All I can really say is that, in 2024, I still thoroughly enjoyed it - significantly more than the most recent 2D Sonic game, and especially more than any of the recent 3D games.

Just kind of lame. The game itself is alright, but all the level design is really uninspired (especially considering it is usually a 1 to 1 copy). This is especially bad in the stages that were originally 3d, where set pieces that were designed around 3d are poorly translated into 2d or simply not translated at all. Classic sonic controls slightly better than regular Generations, but not enough to matter. I really don't like that they give him the homing attack; It's like, after the first three acts which are one to one copies, they couldnt be bothered to design anymore genuinely classic sonic levels. Rival fights are worse, just boring races in reused levels. Could they seriously not make stardust speedway or crisis city backgrounds for Metal Sonic and Silver? They couldve been the most basic assets and I still wouldve preferred it to the alternative of randomly "fighting" Silver in Tropical Resort. I wanted to say the boss fights were better, but that's only true for Big Arms and the Biolizard. Egg Emperor (why is this even the boss for the modern era???), is bad, I was hoping they had at least made a better time eater boss, but no not really. It's about just as bad, maybe a *little* teensy tiny bit better. Unlike it's counterpart, it's not a game that puts a cool spin on existing levels. It just makes me think "Why don't I just play the game this is from".
