Sonic Advance is notable for being the first Sonic game released on a Nintendo console, despite both Sega and Nintendo being well-known rivals on the console market throught the 1990s. Sonic Advance features four playable characters and marks the first playable appearance of Amy Rose on a 2D title. The game borrows elements from the original Sonic the Hedgehog titles for the Sega Genesis, but with the post-Dreamcast artstyle for the characters which was introduced in Sonic Adventure. The game also includes multiplayer features and mini-games. The title was also ported to the Nokia N-Gage under the title "SonicN".

Advance 1 is fairly simple sonic fun, at first I though it was a load of crap that I had to beat the game 4 different times but honestly it was fun to see how each character interacted differently with the level design (especially amy) and replaying it wasn't so bad learning that the chaos emeralds carried between characters, I didn't have to stress about missing the special spring as long as I found it in *one* of the playthroughs. The level themes are some of the best in the franchise, Casino Paradise and Secret Base are definitely highlights. Neo Green Hill is a much needed refreshing take on Green Hill Zone and Angel Island Zone makes a surprise reappearance, however also completely revamped and fresh. Egg Rocket Zone is a fun race against the clock (with some questionable level design but I'll get into that in a moment) with a cool twist of being potentially the only sonic level to change zone names in between acts, in this case to Cosmic Angel Zone, which is also a pretty fun level. The only level that was kind of unremarkable was Ice Mountain Zone, just a little bland is all. The special stages are fun but can be a pain to go through due to the fucked up depth perception which is a result of having a pseudo-3d minigame in a GBA game. The bosses in this game aren't very memorable, and are either painfully easy or painfully frustrating with no in-between. The "final" boss (in X Zone) has one of the least threatening Eggman robot designs ever and looks like it could be a mini-boss from Sonic 3 and this makes the fight not very engaging. The "Extra" Boss is also painfully underwhelming, especially considering you are forced to play the game 4 times before fighting it, going to the moon is a really cool idea, I just wish the boss fight itself was better. It's impossible to talk about advance without bringing up the level design, for the most part the levels are designed fairly well, however, Dimps is notorious for terrible enemy placements and blind jumps. It's nothing that completely ruins the game but there are definitely times where you'll just go "yeah that was total bullshit", this gets more noticeable in the games final 2 zones, Angel Island and Egg Rocket/Cosmic Angel. Angel Island has tons of random pits you won't see coming that will either kill you or set you back far in the level, it also has a generally confusing level layout. Egg Rocket has both of these but with an added bonus of terrible enemy placements and also random springs that will cause you to lose progress should you be curious enough to use them. Cosmic Angel is definitely the lesser bad of the three, but it has some pretty terribly placed enemies and spikes that are scattered absolutely everywhere. But despite these issues they really knock it out of the park with some of these level designs, every playthrough I would still be excited whenever I got to revisit Casino Paradise and Secret Base Zone, not just because of the awesome aesthetic but because these stages are genuinely designed in a really fun way, they encourage speed while also not making different routes a pain to navigate or get to, while also introducing fun level gimmicks. Overall Sonic Advance is a great start to the series, introducing a basic Sonic formula served in a fresh way and despite its caveats, it's still an amazing game
