Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is a stealth-platformer developed by Sucker Punch Productions and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Released in 2002 for the PlayStation 2, the game follows Sly Cooper, a skilled raccoon thief, as he and his gang attempt to recover the Thievius Raccoonus, a book containing the secrets of his family's thieving legacy. The gameplay combines stealth, platforming, puzzle-solving, and light combat, and is noted for its cel-shaded visuals and humorous narrative. This game is divided into five worlds, each themed around a particular part of the world and the villain headquartered there. Most worlds are structured as a central hub with entrances to numerous individual levels. Each of the levels has a primary goals which earns the player a key. You must collect all the keys in the world to fight the world's boss. Many of the levels have a platformer structure. The objective of these worlds is to reach the location of the key. There are substantial stealth elements here as the player must dodge searchlights and trips lasers which set off alarms and avoid alerting guards. In addition to the main objective, there are clue bottles to find. Finding all the clues in a level allows you to open a safe with a page from the Thievius Raccoonus which grants a new ability of some sort. After getting this, there is also a master thief sprint where the player must get from the start of a level to the exit within a time limit.

I decided to play this on a whim, and I'm glad I did (I also plan on playing the others), despite being a 23 year old game at the time of writing it has aged well in a lot of ways while also aging extremely poorly in other places.
For one, I think the platforming gameplay for the most part serves its purpose and it can be fun 100%'ing levels by collecting all of the clues and cracking all of the safes. Along with the progression of getting new abilities when you do. It has a really nice art style that is pretty timeless, too. I really do think I would have loved this game back when it came out. I would say around 80% of this game in general has aged really well.
As for the areas it aged badly...unskippable dialogue/cutscenes in boss fights and even on replays of missions you've already finished. Very poor voice acting, where a lot of the time it sounds like people are reading their scripts in a monotone voice like I would when reading something out in front of a classroom. There's also "special" levels where you do something different from platforming, like racing or defending someone or doing some timed thing. These levels are almost always pretty awful, ESPECIALLY the timed ones. Racing controls are also god awful and unacceptable considering kart racers in general were already doing pretty great stuff even by the time this game came out, like Crash Team Racing. It feels absolutely awful controlling the driving.
The story is also nothing to write home about, but it's not awful either - I excuse it because storytelling in any game that wasn't Metal Gear back then was usually always not the best. I'm looking forward to playing more Sly, and I enjoyed this game more than I didn't.

sly cooper is one of my favorites! the combat is a ton of fun with alot of upgrades. boss fights were also well designed
Played Sly 3 as a kid randomly on the PS2, Then sometime in late teens I played the 1st game to %100. Enjoyed it more then I thought! Its hard for me to be patient, but it felt good when I got though a part of the game.
What can I say... nostalgic games from my childhood that I never beat as a small child- beating as an adult was so much fun.
Without a single doubt my all time favorite comfort game. This was the first video game I ever bought myself, and so it probably gets a higher rating than it deserves but I don't even care. Back up. This game is a game I returned to my entire life through break ups, through sad times, or just to relive the magic. It's five star and I will never accept a lower rating.
Sly Raccoon propose une histoire captivante et des combats de fin excellents. Les graphismes style bande dessinée ne m'ont pas totalement convaincu, mais cela n'a pas gâché mon plaisir de jouer.

My first (mostly blind) playthrough of the game, ending with 100% Time Trials and Safes. I had always wanted to play since I was younger, and I'm a little disappointed that I didn't play it sooner! Sly as a character is fun, and the overall gameplay is pretty solid too. Outside of time trials, the game was a leisurely stroll with a healthy amount of collectibles and unlocks. There were a handful of stages with music that stuck out to me, and the cel shaded artstyle held up relatively well. It was rough around the edges, but the cracks only really show during the time trial grind. It was very well done for a first game, which leaves me looking forward to the sequels!
A blast from the past! It was such a joy to return to this game once Sony finally decided to make it playable on PS5! A wonderfully charming platformer that plays surprisingly well thanks to the modernized controls! The story and dialogue are entertaining and I will be waiting for the second game!
