As a student of Astral the wizard, you and your friends study all the usual subjects: reading, writing, and sword fighting. As your time at school draws to an end, dark events are taking place on the island of Grans. The two Jewels which seal the Door to Darkness have been stolen, allowing a creature of awesome power to be unleashed. Finding where the Jewels were taken, and why, is a task only the bravest of adventurers can undertake.

Shining Force II is a legendary Tactical JRPG that was amazing at release and still is! This game is great graphically, musically, and the gameplay is tight! The story is kind of basic but serviceable to the game. I would recommend this game and the first to any tactical jrpg lover. A must play!

This isn't my favorite Shining Force game, but it's a fun game. The streamlined approach to the promotion and leveling system was a welcome change from the first game. Keeping stats when a character is promoted likely makes it easier for the developers to plan the game's difficulty, and it doesn't leave the player worried about progressing at a disadvantage. I didn't much enjoy the map exploration in this game. I see what the developers were trying to do in terms of making this game like other RPGs. What held it back was a lot of the convoluted pathing between many areas. Constantly switching between the convoy and taking specific river paths became tedious quickly. I think the first game had more interesting characters, but this game will give you a nice variety of team members. Many characters that join you late in the game may require more effort than they are worth to use, but Claude and Lemon are good exceptions. Shining Force II is notably longer than the first one, and perhaps it is too long to be comfortable for some players. There are forty-three battles, and promoting at level 20 or more instead of ten makes the progress a much longer endeavor. The first game had thirty battles, and you could promote at level ten. It is not at all difficult to level up in Shining Force games, but this game extends itself a lot with leveling. Other games in the series do a more interesting job of using the environment to create unique battle situations. Playing with mithril was a fun idea, but most of the mithril stones are found in random places that have no indication for the player. It is possible to play the whole game without finding any. You can make some fantastic weapons with mithril, but fighting with the low probability you have of getting a good weapon is scarcely worth the effort. The story is nothing to write home about, and remains typical of what you'd expect from the same team that made Golden Sun. A character will speak, and another will reiterate what was said with a superfluous question. The story has some connections to Shining Force: Final Conflict. The game ends with a juvenile and forced romance between two characters who spent no time together.
