TTYD Remake brings a beloved game/franchise into the 2020's era of gaming with some welcome adjustments along the way. Beautiful, paperlike graphics and vibrant colors bring the world to life. Lots of visual enhancements in this version vs the original game, minor gameplay adjustments, and a few new additions to keep fans interested. If you haven't played paper mario or TTYD before on the Gamecube, TTYD Remake is an excellent way to access and experience the game. Highly recommend a play for TTYD fans and newcomers alike. Finished everything except bonus fights & Pit.

I have a strong history with this game. Played it on Gamecube over 20 years ago, made it to the final boss, but NEVER beat the game. So of course when nintendo announced this game, I knew redemption was on my radar. Everything from the original Gamecube game is here, along with some dialogue changes, quality of life improvements (thank you Creepy Steeple pipe and Pipe Room beneath Rogueport). Even the map tells you how many star pieces and shine sprites are in each area, so backtracking for those was easy as pie. I was very glad to finally finish this game properly after all that time, and maybe one day i'll decide to go back for the recipes. Maybe.......

Me ha gustado mucho como este juego mezcla puzzles sencillos, plataformas y por supuesto los combates por turnos dinámicos. Todo ello, junto a una localización buenísima, hacen un juego muy entretenido.

I enjoyed this; I'd say it's about on par with Paper Mario 64, overall. Backtracking is improved a lot from the original TTYD - with the addition of the warp pipes to each main area - but there's still a few tedious chapters that are essentially just fetch quests, and they made the game drag at times. The battle system is significantly improved from the 64 though, with stylish moves adding more depth, and the special moves generally being more engaging or balanced. It's still quite an easy game, but it feels a bit harder to cheese than 64. I think these aspects somewhat balance each other out, and make Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door just another solid entry in the Paper Mario series. It's a shame that this remake runs at half the framerate of the original, but it does look significantly better - with the environments actually appearing as though they're made of paper. I like this visual style for the series, though it is a significant departure from that of the original. I'm somewhat of the opinion that they should've maybe waited until they could have pulled this off at the framerate of the original, but it doesn't drastically detract from the experience. To be honest, this type of game - an RPG with a fixed perspective - doesn't benefit from 60FPS nearly as much as other types do. I don't think The Thousand Year Door is as much of a step up from 64 as others seem to, but it's a great time regardless, and it's definitely worth giving it a shot.

This game has excellent presentation coupled with subpar gameplay that makes me feel mixed on the overall experience. For the presentation, the game is incredibly polished. Every main character can show a unique style and personality, and the game throws a bunch of different scenarios and environments at you during and between chapters. And those visuals are gorgeous, the baked lighting and reflections are a treat to the eyes. The combat structure also appears very solid. Mario's got a jump for flying and non-spiked enemies, a hammer for grounded enemies, and can upgrade each of those through story progression. Additionally, you have a bunch badges you can equip to give different battle effects or new abilities. You also have a partner with different abilities, you can upgrade them, and they have a subset of Mario's character-agnostic actions. Unfortunately, combat itself has a hard time staying engaging. Mario's fundamentals are meta-centralizing and are all you need for 99.9% of enemies. New badges can spice up the action, but remain interesting for only a few fights before becoming routine. Your special attacks use flower points, but you can spend half a turn replenishing that and health points using a cheap star ability that replenishes usually after two full turns. Partners also have a hard time mattering, being incredibly specialized and less effective than Mario's robust toolkit. As for the non-combat, it suffers a lot. Most RPGs either make traversal fun or have super convenient warps for getting back to previous areas. 95% of traversal is just rushing from point A to B on flat land, with the remaining 5% using overworld abilities or platforming. There are warps but they are fairly out of the way, especially if you want to check something quickly before resuming your main quest. NPCs in towns feel unsubstantial, each chapter feels a bit too long, and the story doesn't try anything deep or engaging. Dialogue from partners feels generic and interchangeable after the initial area where you get them, and from others is okay enough. The game's lack of overall depth but moderate gameplay breadth makes it a good candidate to pick up and put down every few months, and so I plan to slowly finish it and enjoy it piecemeal. It is a bit disappointing that the game's personality feels performative and no area has made me want to keep playing for super long. I will say that this game could easily get bumped up to an 8 if the rest of it does well, or I encounter one or two fun side quests. Writing this review right after doing 50 of the 100 pit trials then all of the combat focused chapter 3 isn't doing it any favours.

I feel like I should preface this, I never played TTYD growing up, and I think that really will colour my experience with it. TTYD has two major gameplay sections, overworld and combat, lets start with the overworld. Overworld navigation is pretty simple, jumping feels good, the problem arises with with attacking, you can attack to initiate a first strike on any enemy, the issue is that you may only attack to the left or the right of Mario, while enemies can attack from below and above and you generally will not have enough time to reposition yourself before you're hit and forced into a battle. Another minor issue is that you can acquire a badge that allows you to insta kill significantly weaker enemies without a battle (good) the problem is if these enemies get a first strike on you, you're forced into a battle with an incredibly weak enemy that you gain little from fighting, I feel like it would be better if you just took damage and weren't forced into a battle. One last reoccurring issue is that often times you're forced to walk across long swaths of screens, usually 3-4, for very simple reasons, generally talking to NPCs, this happens a lot and really starts to wear on you when you just want to progress in the story but instead you have to retread ground you've already covered, maybe a few times over. As for combat, its very very simple, now this isn't necessarily a negative but I personally find it a bit boring and less fun than systems that have a bit more cogs turning. I think this is a symptom of the two person party system. Later in the game it does open up slightly more with buff items and the ability to engage with the badge system, however both of these are severely limited due to your very limited inventory which is generally better suited to carrying healing items instead of buffs and how little badge points you can choose over HP and FP making builds as a concept harder to engage with. The story is much like the gameplay, not very complex, which again isn't necessarily and ding against the game, Mario receives a treasure map, Princess Peach is kidnapped, hi-jinx ensue. I feel like I should state that I have emotional processing issues, making some of the story beats that I'm told are really tear jerkers fall flat. The visuals are incredible, stylized games like this often appeal to me, due to their immortal good looks, but this being uprezzed from its old look on the gamecube to the switch just makes everything pop like nothing else. The original TTYDs soundtrack was no slouch by any means, but listening to it versus the remasters is like night and day. The originals music feels very contained and the switch version feels so wide and expansive, like it has opened a whole new world of music that just wasn't possible on the Gamecube.

This remake makes a 10/10 an 11/10. Everything is improved on. Definitely worth the money probably my top 5 of all time. Love the characters and the story. Huge crush on Goombella, I love her.
