It is the seventh game of the Fire Emblem series, the second game in the series to be released for the Game Boy Advance, and the first to be released in both North America and Europe. It features a prologue storyline designed to introduce newcomers to Fire Emblem gameplay and tactical basics. The overall narrative is a prequel to the events of the previous game, Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade, which is set twenty years later. The game was first released under the localized title "Fire Emblem" in the West, but it was later rebranded as "Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade" when Fire Emblem Heroes was released.

I've tried playing through Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade multiple times, but never really felt the urge to see it to the end until its release on the Nintendo Switch Game Boy Advance app. Coming back to it now after playing many more of the recent entries, it's still surprising how little has changed between old and new Fire Emblem. For the Game Boy Advance, Fire Emblem 7/Blazing Blade still has a pretty intriguing story. It's clearer to me now more than ever that Fire Emblem has always had good characters, and that Fates and Engage were just temporary wobbles. Fire Emblem 7 has very good gameplay in my opinion, though I'm not particularly skilled at any of the games, so can't really comment on why. I may even like it solely because it's kind of easy. That is, aside from the difficulty inherent to permadeath. I'm not really sure what my thoughts are on permadeath still. A unit dying usually just means I'll restart a chapter. I'll do an ironman run - a self imposed challenge where restarts aren't allowed - of a Fire Emblem game one day, but I don't really feel as though this would be that rewarding for any of the games I've played so far. I don't enjoy having to restart every time a unit dies, but I also like each battle having high stakes. It's a bit of a conundrum. I think the limited rewind system of the more recent games is a pretty good midground, but I also see benefit in the games continuing to be designed around the fact some of your units *will* die. While Three Houses, for example, feels as though it assumes none of your units will ever die - as you rarely ever get "replacement" units - Fire Emblem 7 has a lot of units that are essentially the same but better or worse. I think I like this approach better, but if everyone just restarts anyways is there really a point in designing the games like this? That's also not accounting for the fact that games like this one become almost impossible in the endgame if you've had units with high investment die. I don't think I'll ever get to the bottom of how I feel about Fire Emblem's game design... I will say though, that the massive difficulty spike in the final battle of this game was really off-putting. I don't think I'd have beaten the game if it wasn't for the fact I had some good support units, as the only character that really did anything in the end was one I was given in that final chapter. For as little as Fire Emblem has changed between Fire Emblem 7 and now, I think it's mostly changed for the better. Certain things are almost objectively a downgrade, such as the really weak supports that the series used to have. They're not really intuitive at all, and aren't really worth grinding for. With weird things like supports, I'm surprised this game has the option to skip combat animations. That feels like the kind of option some modern games lack. In fact, FE7 allows you to turn animations on/off on a per unit basis. I don't think even recent games allow for that. I do kind of miss the middle ground option that the newer games provide though - where you can enable animations but speed through these. I like FE7s animations a lot, but some of them are just far too slow. Speaking of slow, I'm not sure how people ever put up with the default text speed in this game. It's kind of terrible that important cutscenes ignore your text speed setting and default back to this. I completely clocked out of some of these scenes because they were such a slog. Fire Emblem 7 is a really good game for the Game Boy Advance, and I think modern Fire Emblem games could learn to take from the GBA games more. Engage might have done to an extent in its overall gameplay and vibrant colours, but it surprisingly missed a lot of what makes the GBA games good in terms of story and character. The rewind offered in the Nintendo Switch Online GBA app definitely makes Fire Emblem 7 waste less of your time, but I think I might have relied on it too much. I just often made really small mistakes that would have cost me up to an hour of gameplay, which is what makes me really appreciate the rewind of the recent games. Maybe I'm just bad, but so be it. The final map would have took hours if not for rewind.

This still holds up. I like pre-Awakening Fire Emblem more tha post-Awakening Fire Emblem.

Und mit 42 spielbaren Charaktere hat man eine riesige Auswahl.
