The Evil Within is an action survival horror game that draws inspiration from the Resident Evil series with a grimy look with exaggerated gore. The game was directed by Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil & a former Resident Evil 4 director. You must navigate through the hostile game world with limited resources, this requires to use your wits to survive and correctly manage your resources as you encounters various terrors and dangers throughout the game. The environments may also change without warning in real-time based on your actions, adding more variables to the game.

SCORE : 7 / 10 Story: The story is what hooked me immediately and what kept me going, made me push through. We started with a mystery that I really wanted to unravel. And that we did the more we played. It was very dark, creative and the storytelling was well done. You really felt like you were slowly losing your mind. Soundtrack: Claire De Lune is always a hit. I will always think of this game when I hear it now. Visuals: For it's time pretty good I think! You have the choice between big black bars taking over half of your screen constantly or having awfully zoomed in camera. You can't seem to win here. Gameplay: The game looks like it would play more 'fluent' than it is - it is quite clunky. The aim is absolutely horrible at first, until you level your weapon of choice to be more steady. If you don't chances are you'll miss shots even if the reticle is RIGHT on target. Quite frustrating! Sometimes the input bugged out and the character wouldn't make a move he should be able to do. Then after death - retrying the same thing again, suddenly it worked...? I have to be honest, the DLCs were awful for me. After spending 15h improving the stats of my character, they remove it all to replace it with an utterly incompetent person who can't run, vault over objects or use an axe unless it's for stealth attacks. I pushed through for the plot, but damn I didn't have fun. Difficulty: I switched from Survival to Casual halfway through the main game to enjoy it more. Enemies were still strong but I had a few more items to endure the clunkiness and not die to bugs and headshots not counting. I played the DLCs in Survival. Survival is okay if you have patience 🤣 Audience: Definitely adults. Grind: Not a lot ,you can stick to the main objectives and miss out some loot and thus upgrades, but the game is quite streamlined and short. Price: ~ 20 bucks Bugs: A few bugs and glitches here and there. Controller support: Yep, worked like a charm! Enjoyment: I guess it depends on the mood, the person and their patience. I mostly struggled when my character wasn't as reactive as I thought he'd be or when shots just went through heads and hit the wall instead. Replayability: I don't see myself playing this again tbh and from what I can tell, the game only has one ending. One could try to focus on other weapon types to spice it up. Top Fun Things To Do: Stomping heads, blasting through doors, popping heads :)

For a game that came out over a decade ago, The Evil Within, still holds it own as a prime example of true survival horror. Resource management is king, but the need for ammunition and medical supplies, comes with the risk of conflict, so to however does fleeing, bringing the potential of running headlong into far worse trouble than that which you were attempting to escape in the first place. Fight or flight is a constant consideration. And man, does this game enjoy making the player suffer. The challenge is significant, more so than more recent horror titles, at times even frustraitingly so. I think my prior playthrough spared me a few potential headaches but even still I died close to 50 times before crossing the finish line on this one.

O jogo daquele “cara de boné” mistura a jogabilidade e ambientação de Resident Evil 4 com narrativa de Silent Hill. É interessante de se jogar mas possui muitos sustos forçados e um fator gore elevado, o que pode incomodar alguns jogadores (fora as trollagens que o jogo oferece). Apesar de ser possível zerar sem um auxílio de um guia, só recomendo jogar se você não possui sensibilidade a sangue ou carne viva.
