SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI V 90 "Il Dark Souls dei Jrpg" GRAFICA:8/9 SONORO:8 1/2 GIOCABILITA':9+ LONGEVITA':9 TRAMA:7 1/2 ATMOSFERA:8 1/2 +Gameplay strepitoso +Demoni artisticamente meravigliosi +Lungo, difficile ed appagante -Storia poco incisiva -Spiazzerà i neofiti(spiaze) -Nient'altro È giusto che questa recensione parta con una piccola , onesta premessa: questo titolo è stato il mio primo Shin Megami Tensei in assoluto , così come Persona 5 è stato il mio primo Persona. Chi vuole fare gatekeeping dicendo “ecco allora non hai mai giocato quelli veri “ ,oppure”ecco , adesso che sono diventati più mainstream è facile giocarli “ può smettere di leggere per quanto mi riguarda. Ma cos'è Shin Megami Tensei V? Sviluppato da Atlus, gameplay con combattimento a turni, demoni da evocare, storia che tratta di Dei e Diavoli… insomma sulla carta un Jrpg piuttosto stereotipato. E invece , assolutamente no. Il gameplay di Shin Megami Tensei V non è per tutti, la sua difficoltà media può essere paragonata alla Ultra-difficile di un qualsiasi altro Jrpg di stampo classico. Si gira per le estese mappe di gioco reclutando ed evocando demoni presi da antiche leggende di un po’ tutte le culture: da sempre questo è stato il marchio di fabbrica sia degli Shin Megami Tensei che dei loro spin-off , i Persona. Il nostro protagonista è un liceale che si fonderà con un demone e si troverà invischiato suo malgrado in una lotta di potere tra angeli e demoni per succedere al trono del Creatore, da poco scomparso. Il plot è interessante così come la possibilità di far prendere alcune decisioni al nostro Nahobino(questo il nome del protagonista fuso con un demone) che tuttavia non influenzeranno direttamente l’andamento della storia nell’immediato ma ci guideranno verso uno dei finali. Chi ha amato i Persona per la loro narrativa e personaggi qui non troverà pane per i propri denti: la narrazione è ridotta all’osso e la mancanza di un vero e proprio party di comprimari rendono l’esperienza narrativa molto più blanda e “di sfondo” rispetto ad altri Jrpg. Le cut-scenes sono di qualità altalenante e dei 4 finali solamente uno è soddisfacente, ossia quello segreto:gli altri ci lasceranno un forte senso di incompiuto. SMT V è un'esclusiva Nintendo Switch,piattaforma dall'hardware meno performante del mercato di console attuale, ma gli Atlus hanno sfornato un prodotto esteticamente ispiratissimo e di grande qualità visiva: apparte i meravigliosi demoni, le ambientazioni e lo stile del gioco sono davvero eccellenti cosi come le macro-aree che esploreremo durante l'avventura. Poco male che il gioco giri a 30 fps non perfettamente granitici, perchè con i combattimenti a turno la fluidità non è certo un requisito importante. Discorso simile possiamo fare per il comparto sonoro: la OST di Shin Megami Tensei V è molto particolare e ben riuscita in ogni aspetto. Si spazia tra loop di brani rockeggianti a pezzi quasi new-wave passando per la classica e il metal. Insomma una gioia per le orecchie. Doppiaggi inglesi nella media ma che ,a causa di una anonimità generale dei personaggi secondari, faticano a spiccare. Arriviamo al punto focale: il gameplay. Per fare un paragone diretto utilizzando un meme: Persona is for boys, Shin Megami Tensei is for men. In SMT V i nemici ci romperanno il culo. Potenziale acquirente avvisato, potenziale acquirente mezzo salvato. Il livello di difficoltà è alto anche se viene settato al minimo e , volendo fare un altro stupido paragone, questo può facilmente essere definito il "Dark Souls" dei Jrpg. Però se siete come il sottoscritto malati di tattica , build, matematica applicata alle statistiche e amate le sfide hardcore, SMT V sarà davvero un piacere da giocare. Se potessi dare qualche consiglio a chi volesse approcciare questo gioco venendo da Jrpg classici come Dragon Quest e Final Fantasy mi limiterei a dire "abusate di buff e debuff, in questo gioco contano per davvero". Se nella media dei Jrpg basta attaccare,curare,attaccare,curare qui bisognerà ponderare ogni turno del Nahobino e di ciascun demone evocato ragionando in base ai nemici che abbiamo di fronte e cercando di anticipare le sue mosse. Insomma non è per chi cerca un'esperienza semplice e rilassata. Ah dimenticavo: tenetevi più allenati possibile , perdete ore a livellare e salvate spesso. Se perdete la battaglia è game over e non ci sono salvataggi automatici. La campagna è lunga e impegnativa ma, una volta imparate bene le meccaniche, le 60 ore necessarie per vedere i titoli di coda scorreranno via molto velocemente. Shin Megami Tensei V è forse il miglior Jrpg che abbia mai giocato a livello di gameplay. Mi sento di consigliarlo a tutti gli amanti dei giochi di ruolo seri e dei combattimenti a turni mentre invece è forse meglio sconsigliarlo a chi da un Jrpg cerca la campagna in stile Shonen Manga con cast di comprimari carismatici e storia strappalacrime. Qui è il gameplay a regnare sovrano.

Oh SMT V... What a conflicting game. Perhaps the best gameplay in any of the SMT games, but the story is so directionless. So much so that it took me over 3 years (during which an enhanced version of the game came out !!) to complete this game because nothing was really drawing me back to it in terms of plot. Characters develop so unnaturally, making big leaps rather than smooth progressions. Dazai especially is laughably bad, and it's awful that Miyazu's plot is part of a missable side quest. The game has very strong art direction that's honestly kind of impressive for the switch, but god the console is struggling, the game is blurry and stutters often. Not sure how I feel about overall alignment being ultimately unimportant. I quite liked the way SMT IV handled it with your alignment being basically the only factor in Flynn's decisions, it basically gave the MC their own ambitions and goals based on the choices they make and things they say throughout the story. But... it was quite a pain in the ass (but rewarding) to do the neutral ending as a result. So it's conveinient but I feel like choices lose most impact and weight. I did the "Create a world for humanity alone" ending, and I found out after finishing that this is quite an unpopular ending, which is something that surprised me. I really like this ending, the cycle of Mandala is a really interesting concept that has really cool ramifications on the greater Megami Tensei lore. And I think alot of people dislike this ending due to an overattachment to the demons in the game. I think that this world will never prosper because demons will always lead to death and conflict, as a result I think it absolutely makes sense that the Nahobino would make this choice. Yeah so basically, good gameplay, shit overall plot, good ending. Hope vengeance builds on the good while getting rid of the bad.

The game in itself is great. But the story is lacking at best. Hopefully vengeance fixes this.

Engrossing, cerebral story as is par for the series. Incredible world design, and platforming through it adds a fantastic new element. Typically excellent megaten turn-based combat.

Best combat system out of all the SMT games. Also pretty easy overworld/map puzzles, unlike Strange Journey or SMT 3. Weak on the story though.
