Year 2012. Six years passed since the time of the Second catastrophe to have made the April events of 1986 fade. The game is set in the Chernobyl exclusion zone which turned from a destiny-breaker place into a threat to all mankind. The Zone is reluctant to open up its mysteries and needs to be forced to do it. It is a rare hero who can reach the very heart of the Zone onto find out what danger awaits him there. A danger which, compared to marauders and enemy groupings, all monsters and anomalies, will seem a mere preparation to the meeting with something more fatal and threatening. But for now… get ready, hero. Collect artefacts and trade, grope your path and keep an eye on the rear, catch roentgens and fight – only make sure you survive! And then, perhaps, if you are persistent and truly lucky, you will find out why all this had fallen on you.

Already with its beginning the game felt iconic. The intro itself is amazing because it starts in a super cozy place that radiates the 2000-era games atmosphere. There's also another spot like this further on and they've managed to make them feel like small havens in a scary hostile world. The world feels alive as you'll find new enemies (or maybe friends) in places you've already explored before that makes it so even if you need to backtrack a bit you won't be running through empty areas. The more you progress, too, the more you open the way for friendlier faces to make camps in previously hostile areas. The story was an intriguing mystery you have to solve, which is worth replaying because, even though I did only one of the possible endings, and did my best exploring, I'm sure there's things I've missed out in the world and important parts of the story left in the other endings. However, there are some things that need to be fixed. There were a few crashes but they were rare and weren't a huge issue, and second minor one is that the one of the journal sections would constantly reset and mark all entries there as unread, even though you've read them, which just made it harder to keep track of the new entries, especially once you start accumulating them. The main issue was the inventory and specifically that dropping items sometimes bugs out and the button isn't working. So at times you have to try multiple times before it drops the items, which can be rather stressful in moments when someone's already trying kill you and there's no time for dilly dallying.
