Mortal Kombat is a 2011 fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios. It is the ninth main installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise and a soft reboot of the series. Although beginning during the events of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, the plot retroactively revisits the earliest period in the Mortal Kombat series: the events of the first three games. The storyline follows Raiden, the divine protector of Earth, as he attempts to change the outcome of the Armageddon events by contacting his past self.

PRO: enhanced moves are one of the best additions to the franchise CON: even if they are flashy and cool, it feels so cheap to lose to X-Ray attacks after a long fight

"The third part in a new guise" Mortal Kombat 9 seemed to me like a kind of remake of the third part. It's like I'm playing the same third part, but in a newer wrapper. I got this feeling, perhaps because of the old familiar arenas, because of the characters drawn almost identically to those from the third part. I don't know. But the developers managed to convey this spirit of nostalgia. The practical abilities and techniques of the characters have not changed, but have only been slightly restored. In general, I think that MK9 is essentially one big restoration and in my opinion it turned out well. I'm ambivalent about the plot in fighting games. On the one hand, it’s good that he exists. This gives us, in addition to history, the revelation of certain characters, for example. It's nice to see or hear backstories and just stories of our favorite characters in fighting games and so on. On the other hand, the plot in fighting games, oddly enough, has enough stars in the sky. Content made in a hurry, just for show. Based on a sufficient number of passages of the plot in various fighting games, I can conclude that the plot in this genre is often extremely mediocre. If the main task of the plot is to reveal the characters, then it would be better to simply make a description of certain characters. The main emphasis, the main work in the development of fighting games, I believe, needs to be invested in the gameplay component, that is, in the strong and main side of games of this genre. I think the lack of a plot would not ruin the game in any way. Story aside, the game can only be praised and celebrated for capturing the spirit of MK3 and the fond memories of it.

Game is a lot of fun, however, some of the fights in Story Mode are just plain bullshit. More specifically the Shao Kahn fights. PC cutscenes are awful looking, but game looks great in terms of in game engine.
