Tried it in 2019 and dropped it until now. Back then I kinda liked it, but wasn't really into roguelikes. Since I've played and enjoyed a few since then, I thought I'd try going back. Had fun, game wasn't as long as I thought it'd be, but still good length. Mechanically it's pretty simplistic, but still fun and a bit challenging. I had the most difficulty with the mid section, both the 4th and final bosses I beat in one try, and they were the only ones I went in with fully upgraded gear, that made a huge difference. It's been a while since I've played a shopkeeper game, nice to get back into one.

Good game, classic grind theme. Go to dungeons, progress, get stuff and sell them to your store while interacting with NPCs

I was so conflicted over this game. Moonlighter could have so easily been one of my all-time favourite games – if it wasn't filled with so many infuriating and kinda obnoxious mechanics. To start with the positives, I really, really loved the shopkeeping side of the game. I was expecting this to be my least favourite part of it, but I could not get enough of running the shop, figuring out how to price things based on the notes in your merchant journal and the moods of the shoppers, and keeping an eye out for shady shoplifters. Such a novel idea, thought it was genius. I also generally liked the combat once I got the hang of it – it looks simple at first but there's a surprising amount of nuance and rhythm to it. Sometimes things get a bit too bullet hell, but otherwise it was fun. Also cannot fault the graphics and music – I regularly get the soundtrack stuck in my head. As for the not-so-good, Moonlighter gets real grindy, real fast. The entire game is a loop of dipping into dungeons, grabbing what you can and teleporting home when your backpack is full. You have to constantly balance bag space between key upgrade materials and high value treasures to fund said upgrades. And boy, do you need those funds, because the price curve of each weapon or armour upgrade tier is so steep it might as well be vertical. As a result, you're always compromising somewhere and having to make more trips in and out of the same part of the same dungeon. All the while you make incremental progress towards the dungeon's eventual boss, and that's assuming you don't die and lose your entire backpack (as well as waste 20 minutes of your life because there's no way to recover treasures you lose on death). This loop got less tedious when I turned down the difficulty, but it was still pretty repetitive. And of course, the Wanderer. The invincible green phantom who spawns in if you take too much time exploring a dungeon floor and kills you in one hit. I still don't see any good reason why Moonlighter has to have a punishment for taking your time to explore a dungeon thoroughly, but boy did it take the fun straight out of the game.

Um, I really tried to enjoy this game. The premise is interesting and the story has so much promise but the gameplay is a bit jarring- some hits do not register, some rolls do not register, and there are chances of completely soft-locking yourself in the dungeon at the beginning of the game. I love the aspect of owning a shop and having to haggle with customers but going into the dungeon was frustrating. Play if you want, but I did not finish it.

i love pixel games like these. a fun dungeon crawler/rouge like with some shop management elements and a GREAT gameplay loop. Go into dungeon fight through rouge like randomly generated levels. make it out or quit early. and bring back items to sell to make money to acquire gear to explore more of the dungeon. rinse. repat. great fun.
