Radiant Dawn is a turn-based tactics RPG and a direct sequel, 3 years have passed, to the game "Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance" for the Nintendo GameCube. It features new magic, class upgrades, weapons, and a reworked forging system. The game uses a somewhat upgraded version of the previous engine so the games look similar. You can carry over some data from the previous games save file but only a normal or hard mode file will work because a bug will cause the Wii to freeze if an easy mode save file is on the GameCube memory card.

I want to be honest here, I don't want to dislike this game, but there's a number of factors that tie into why I have the opinion about it I have. The unit availability issues, the misleading difficulties, the massive power difference of your Part 1 units vs. the enemy, nerfs to other characters, and more. Normal Mode is not Normal. This was apparently a mistranslation, so Normal is the Japanese version's Hard mode. This naturally makes things harder out the gate, especially with how bad the Dawn Brigade is. Literally, they are among some of the weakest starting units in the series, not helped by the fact Michiah is more fragile than fine china and light magic sucks. Then there's the first major issue, the problems revolving around units and when they're usable. Radiant Dawn has a nasty habit of making certain units unusable for certain maps, or for specific examples like Tormod and friends, nearly the whole game after Part 1, only to give them back to you underpowered on a Part 4 map where they can't stand up to the enemy unless you properly prepared them with bonus experience...all the way back in Part 1, where your Dawn Brigade units need it more to survive Part 3, where they only get 3 maps at all, usually against floods of enemies. The biorhythm is also back, but instead of being a fairly innocent mechanic you can ignore, it's far worse and more intrusive than ever before here, being able to affect your damage and hit rates. This was the source of many turns of turtling so I could avoid missing hits. This game also introduces a character who may put New Mystery Bantu to shame, Fiona. Only usable in two maps of Part 1, abysmal bases, and the only cav the Dawn Brigade gets. Sure, you also have Jill, but she suffers from being tied to the Dawn Brigade, so she gets little time for action. Someone who was in Path of Radiance who DOES get more action this time is Haar. He's very good, but the lategame also just hands you free hyper strong units that can carry you through the endgame. Speaking of endgame, 5 part finale, Sleep staffs can go to hell, a boss with 100 HP and a final boss that can just decide to ignore Provoke and attack who she feels like, or just hit everyone at once. I sometimes wondered who designed this game this way. Even with all of that, though, it's still the second part of the Tellius story, and it's not often we get continuations of stories in the same region. The Tellius story is in general solid, but I don't like the plot convenient parts like the blood pacts or Michiah's foresight, which only seems to work when the plot decides it's time for it to work. A major problem could've been instantly dealt with if a certain, blatantly evil mage was just killed in Part 1, but nobody even considered the possibility. Michiah herself is honestly part of my problem with the story. Sure, she's alright in Part 1, but she blindly follows orders and joins the war in Part 3 and commits war crimes, then she's hardly even a character in Part 4, merely a vessel for Yune to exposition at us. Sure, she at least has a bit of character growth unlike a lord like Marth, who starts and ends mostly the same character. Did I forget to mention important story context and 2 units are locked behind a second playthrough, one of which requiring specific steps to recruit? Because that's a thing. Sure, it's not as bad as being forced to replay the first 10 chapters of Three Houses 4 times to see all the story, and it's worse there, sure, but this game is a slog sometimes to play. I will say it again, I don't want to dislike this game. I really liked Path of Radiance, but the factors in this game just...don't attract me very much. It feels like they course corrected a bit too much from Path of Radiance in the gameplay department. Also I now have a newfound hatred for the Sleep staff. Thracia is going to be fun in the eventual future.

Not as good as the previous game but did improve on many gameplay visuals and overall is a gorgeous game for the time. Story has issues but I would still encourage others to try it.

The other game in my top two Fire Emblems. This game is a huge mess, but I still love it. I like the continuation of the story from Path of Radiance, the skill system is more freeform when compared to Path of Radiance, the Bonus EXP system is more exploitable, the support system is freeform, and the introduction of ledges in the maps is a neat way to balance the classes. I don't like how unbalanced the difficulty is. Playing through this blind is a nightmare because there's a ton of hidden items and it's hard to plan ahead when you don't know who is going to be available in your party or if you're going to need to prepare for a deficit in funds or EXP. Another thing I don't like is how hard it is to see all of the game's content. You have to have owned PoR and carried over your save data on top of fulfilling the super specific conditions to see some scenes. I wouldn't be surprised if 95% of players don't end up seeing all of the background lore. This most recent playthrough was interesting. It was the first time Nephenee wasn't the MVP of the playthrough and it also made me realize that I really don't enjoy playing on hard mode. I should probably stick to normal for all of my games moving forward.

I hate this game is priced out so high now, I absolutely loved playing this on the wii. Hands down the magic just got better during the later half of the game.
