i think having to level up several characters is too overwhelming for me. i like the latter ff games more wherein the number of party members was a bit more constrained, i guess? i do really love terra, though.

People were not kidding when they said there was no real main character in this story. Almost everyone you recruit in the first half of the game feels important with their own relevance and contributions to the experience. Terra stands out simply for her connection to everything going on, but all the other characters are deeply affected by what happens in the story. That being said, with about 14 characters total some characters are more important than others. Late game additions have little to nothing to do in terms of the story or character growth. The combat in this game is really fun. Not once did I feel like it was unfair and the entire gameplay loop was fun the entire way through. I never got bored with the battles. That said I did play the game with the fastest battle speed possible. Being able to teach every character the same abilities, for the most part, led to some really great team compositions. Most of the characters were fun to use, and Sabin stands out in particular due to his Blitz ability command. The magicite system was already great as it was the main reason why there was so much versatility for characters. However, I did miss out on keeping Shadow in the group for the end and I had no idea Gogo even existed in the game until I saw the end credits. The story is also pretty good and moved at such a fast in the beginning that I could see why this entry was so beloved. Characters are introduced quickly and you learn about them just as fast. Within the first few hours you'll have a bunch of characters all with compelling stories and motivations. It does slow down and dwindle quite in the final part of the game though, as the last quarter mainly consists of questing and exploring with minimal story by comparison. Right before playing this, I found out that the development of FFVI was actually done so far ahead of time that the entire last quarter was added in after the scenario had been completed. It definitely feels that way with how little story it has, but it really elevates the entire experience as I don't think the game would have been nearly as good without it. The characters are great. I love Terra just from my exposure to her in Dissidia but I liked her even more after playing her own entry. Locke, Sabin, Edgar, Celes, and Cyan are also wonderul. Some of their stories got really dark really quickly and definitely got a few tears out of me. Shadow is kinda just there like his name implies and I only learned about his story after the fact as I didn't see his flashbacks in my playthrough and subsequently lost him to his permadeath section. Everyone else is good as well but I can't comment on Gogo and Umaro is just a yeti lol. Kefka is also fantastic but nowhere near as "scary" as some people claimed he was. His actions definitely spoke for themselves but I never felt intimidate by him. He always balanced himself out between his antics and his actions (although poisoning Doma was really fucked up). I could hear his Dissidias voice every time I read his lines. He doesn't get much at the end though and he was one of the easiest bosses that I've fought in the series so far. I actually completely misunderstood the group creation during the final battle and put my weakest characters first thinking that the parties would get switched out as the fight progressed. Safe to say the fight would have been even easier had I just used all the heavy hitters fromm the start. Kefka also doesn't get much fanfare when he's defeated. He just ends and then the credits roll while everyone escapes. He has a great presence All in all a pretty great entry in the series and I see why so much people hail it as the best one. Glad I finally played this one. It's pretty great.

If this were my first-ever JRPG, it would have made me fall in love with the genre, but due to its defining tropes and quirks that went on to influence every turn-based RPG that came after, lacking fresh glamour for me, I quickly grew tired of the campy nature of the title. The characters, although misplaced in their narrative introductions, are all unique from one another. A monumental improvement from the flat stand-ins of FFI. However, the zany nature of every character often detracted from scenes that were made to be more emotional or serious. Even when everyone I loved was presumed dead, the devs decided to throw in a boob joke and have a dog slay a random eldritch horror on its own. Although I do recognize a lot of the story is a product of its time and similar writing methods applied to modern RPGs can be fruitful, like with Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 drawing heavy inspiration from FFVI. Expertise is evident in the music. Not much to say there; it's expected of any FF title, but usually the sprites are also a highlight, yet I ended up enjoying more of the enemy designs in FFI. I attribute to the same problem with tone where some of the hardest bosses use Looney Tunes anvils to attack your party members, taking you away from an otherwise nerve-racking battle. The final boss reminded me of the immense sprite work talent from the original, but to me, it was too little too late. Gameplay was the main highlight for me in terms of the battle systems, but the shoddy bosses and enemy designs that rely on off gimmicks only discoverable in the complementary handbook or online forums are an archaic method of inflating difficulty that I'm glad most games have long since abandoned. It was an interesting ride, a very long ride that many would argue (especially my chatters) was too damn long, but I'm glad I got the iconic title under my belt because I think it will allow me to better appreciate the long strides FFVII did for the franchise.
