A port of Final Fantasy V for PlayStation that adds an opening and ending FMV cutscene as well as some gameplay improvements such as the ability to sprint. It is largely similar to the Super Famicom version but due to the CD-ROM format of PlayStation it has longer load times in comparison to the Super Famicom version. In Japan it was available as part of Final Fantasy Collection, while in North America and Europe it was available only as part of Final Fantasy Anthology. This is the first international release of Final Fantasy V as the Super Famicom version was only released in Japan.

I absolutely love this game. I first played the PSN version when my second son was newborn as a task to keep me awake and focused for late night feedings and rocking. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was then and even more impressed on this second playthrough of my original PS version via an emulation handheld. The job system is just stellar. It's not quite as nuanced as the Final Fantasy Tactics system, and there are quite a few jobs that feel fairly pointless. However, the "super jobs" of Mime and Freelancer really add a lot of depth (now that I understand them) via the way they incorporate stats, boosts, and passives from your suite of Mastered jobs. They make Mastering important and give you an avenue to focus on when crafting your characters rather than just doing the bare minimum on each prerequisite job to get to the one you want. The story really hit me a lot more thoroughly this time around, or at least its freshness has given me a new way to appreciate this game. The overall boss is kind of "just there" still but his backstory and how everything comes together really worked a lot better for me this time. Additionally, the way the "three worlds" are handled is incredibly fun and unique and I kind of love it. Overall this is a great game and easily my favorite of the 'Classic 6' FFs. Check it out if you like an older-school JRPG, job systems, or funny translations!
