Dynasty Warriors es un videojuego de lucha basado en armas. A diferencia de las últimas entregas de la serie, que son hack and slash, Dynasty Warriors es un juego de lucha 'uno contra uno'. Dynasty Warriors se destaca por ser una desviación sorprendente de los juegos de estrategia por los que Koei era conocido. Tras su lanzamiento, la mayoría de los críticos lo recibieron como un éxito a este respecto. Todo el combate se basa en armas, similar a las series Samurai Shodown, The Last Blade y Soulcalibur. En lugar de tener un único botón de bloqueo multiuso, como en la mayoría de los juegos de lucha, el jugador debe parar los ataques del enemigo ejecutando su propio ataque a la misma altura en el momento correcto, dejando al enemigo vulnerable al ataque. Los escenarios están en Amanecer, Mediodía y Anochecer.
