Drakengard follows the story of a kingdomless prince named Caim who fights for the Union against the Empire. Under the Union's protection are the Hierarchs and the Goddess, currently Caim's sister Furiae, who is a human manifestation of one of the four seals that protect the world from being broken. As the game begins, Cain is fatally wounded in a battle with the Empire. Encountering a captured Red Dragon who is also near death, Caim makes a fateful choice. In exchange for both their lives, the Red Dragon and Caim will enter a pact. This pact will forever chain their lives to one another and link their souls, at the cost of something irreplaceable. Recharged with the fires of a Dragon, Caim's vengeance burns over the enemy... The player controls Caim on his quest. The game is separated into three distinct modes: Aerial combat, Ground combat and Event Combat. In Aerial Combat, Caim rides dragonback against a variety of airborne foes breathing fireballs (strong single shots and weaker multiple lock-on shots). The Dragon is agile and is able to evade incoming threats, turning around completely in a moment. In Ground combat, the game is shown in 3rd person though usually large, open areas. Controlling Caim, his primary ability is the use of a variety of weapons found on the battlefield, each with their own magic powers. These are leveled up through continued usage, and specifically through the killing of individual enemies. In ground combat, Caim may also call forth his Dragon to ride and strafe enemies from the air. Event combat is similar to Ground combat, but shown isometrically, restricted to a single weapon and without the aid of a dragon. It is used mainly to tell story sequences.

It is baffling how awful this game is to play, it has great mini stories in weapon descriptions, its story is a wild ride, some of the designs and models look surprisingly good for PS2, just for the areas to be awfully bland. It is a PoS and a blessing at the same time.

Despite the janky brainbreaking repetitive horrendous gameplay, this game is PEAK! Absolutely deserving it's cult classic status!

Drakengard is a game unlike any other, in no place will you find a game that is as bad, is as good, is as such a spectacle as Drakengard. Drakengard has 3 distinct gameplay styles, on foot fighting hordes and hordes of enemies as you pursue an objective, usually killing specific enemies. The second gameplay style is airborne on dragonback, flying through open stages taking down aerial enemies ranging from D&D-esque Beholders to full-on airships using your dragon breath and the all-mighty dragon sneeze which will destroy your speaker system, this gameplay style also makes a less appearance in the first gameplay style where you can switch between the two of them as the situation calls for it. The third and final gameplay style is much akin to the first but with a fixed isometric camera angle, it is used the least out of all of them because, it doesn't really add much to the other game modes than it does take away features from them. What can I say about Drakengards story and characters? What starts as a basic save the princess narrative is corrupted into something wholly unrecognizable, featuring such hits as the suicide fairy, the baby eater and of course, incest. One of the biggest issues I feel is once you're dead set on getting every ending it can become difficult to sus out where you are in the story and what events have actually happened in your current reality. The visuals are well... lacking due to the visual tone of this game, which is pretty dark, things can tend to just blur and fuse together. The soundtrack is something to behold, it was designed to make you feel like you're going crazy, and it certainly accomplishes that. Remember riding home in the back of your parents van with with your favorite CD in your discman and every bump and jostle in the road would cause the disc to skip and repeat? Imagine that but your disc is the work of the old masters and it never ends. I suppose you could call it Avant Garde, and I guess I will. Drakengard is a game ass game, its horrible, its great, its an unforgettable experience, mind numbing gameplay, brainblasting cutscenes and story. You should play it, experience it. But like don't do the the thing where you have to manually unlock the 60+ weapons for the last ending, just cheat lmao

Plays like trash, but power through and you get one of the most disturbing stories ever told in a video game

What an amazing game... The more you play Drakengard, the more you want to know about this extremely DARK fantasy world, about his despair and what else is build around it. DrakeNier saga may be one of my new favourite IP if they get me as much as Drakengard did.

I feel like the gameplay is low compared to our products nowadays, but felt pretty good back in the days, expecially with all the dragon mechanics.

Such a strange story. Never got the final ending because screw having to collect all 99 weapons (or whatever the amount was). Also, it was obvious the sister was into her brother. The dragon combat is actually really good.
