Doesn’t 100% stay true to the anime story, but follows it very closely
This is a fantastic game and I am honestly sad that I never got to experience this game growing up. It covers Goku's entire journey from the moment he meets Bulma to the defeat of King Piccolo. The story is done in bite-sized levels that are surprisingly well paced, engaging, and with variety. Aside from the "normal" levels that have you go from one end to the other, nothing ever feels like it overstays its welcome and the pacing prevents any sense of over repetitiveness. There are boss fights, mini-games, and even entire different gameplay set when for the 1 on 1 fights that make it feel like a fighting game. There is a surprisingly amount of care and attention to put to the boss fights and levels and it is also very nicely animated. It's also a near perfect length for this pocket-sized retelling. The entire experience was just an incredibly fun and pleasant surprise. So much so that it makes the side-scrolling Dragon Ball GT game (forgot what it was called) look like an even bigger piece of trash than it already is.
While I love the Legacy of Goku games, I think this has shot up to first place in my list of GBA era Dragon Ball games.
