Dead or Alive is a 1996 arcade fighting game by Tecmo for the Sega Model 2 (2A CRX and 2B CRX) arcade hardware and the first game in their Dead or Alive franchise. It was ported to the Sega Saturn in 1997. A limited edition was also released for the Saturn which came with an art book. An enhanced port including new characters was released for PlayStation, and later backported for arcade under the title "Dead or Alive++".

O primeiro DOA é jogo um tanto genérico de sua época que não trouxe muita coisa diferente de outros jogos de luta mas que fez o básico e conseguiu continuações no futuro. DOA não tem muito oferecer na área de gameplay e enredo, e também não se destaca no visual e na soundtrack do jogo. A gameplay é simples, com poucos botões para interagir e combos bacanas, tendo sua parte negativa mesmo apenas a IA do jogo que mais pro final fica muito desbalanceada e pode frustrar o jogador (sem contar pequenos erros hitbox por ex). O enredo é fraco e só serve como pano de fundo, sendo bem genérico pra cada personagem. Visualmente o jogo não se destaca também, tendo os personagens roupas nada memoráveis e cenários também bem sem graça (mas a modelagem 3D até que está bem feita pra época). E a trilha sonora também nada chamativa, nada que você vá lembrar depois. Bônus: algo que se destacou mais no DOA foi seu fanservice em cima das personagens femininas que até hoje existe e atrai jogadores.
