I really would not recommend playing this title if you are like me and wanted to see Baldur's Gate humble beginnings. AD&D was a very confusing system that didn't really encourage you to learn it, and I don't think I would even enjoy playing it in it's TTRPG form. Leveling seems incredibly boring, with very little going on level to level. Not to mention the confusing as hell leveling system where different classes leveled at different rates. and MAGES. Why does AD&D freaking hate mages so much to only give them 4 HP????
Way too many companions were in this game, and it was really dumb how you didn't have a general hub to send them to. Also REALLY disliked how there are time limits to complete companion quests after you initially recruit them. This game didn't really want you to take things at a comfortable pace. Additionally, for the characters you have benched, they don't get experience! So they get more and more out-leveled as you don't use them. Neera was level 1 for the entirety of her quest while everyone else was level 5 because I figured they'd get passive experience and maybe I wouldn't have to worry so much about her fragility. Nope! Ended up having a bard as my caster because of it. They also for whatever reason choice the more complicated set ups for the EE classes. I don't think having Neera be a WILD MAGE and be one of the earlier companions you can run into was a smart choice design-wise for people who are new to not only AD&D but also the game overall? Also sassy af voice lines when you bench her, which made me feel awful and I don't like that at all.
The game states you can have up to 5 quick save slots, but tell me why when you quick save, it only updates the base one once the other slots are filled AND doesn't even load the correct save on the quick load? That's so incredibly confusing, and I kept having to go in and manually delete my quick saves so that news ones would load and quick load could actually function the way I know it to. Ridiculous that it was even released in that state.
I liked the artwork from this game. I think that's roughly it.
It's not the game for me and I don't think my mind would be different if I grew up playing this one. I probably would have eventually stopped playing it back then because it's so incredibly un-fun at points. Having to turn on Story Mode specifically for the final fight because the room is trapped to high-hell with only 2 out of the 10 traps in the room being able to be disabled is absolute garbage. Not to mention the bosses caster gets the opportunity to be buffed up to high hell, confuse the group, dominate one person, and then cloudkill the room is just overkill. Let me play the story against something reasonable, don't fucking power-game me.
If you want to experience the story, save yourself the money and watch someone's summary on youtube or something. This game did not age well at all.
