Apollo Justice is the first game in the series that does not feature Phoenix Wright as the main protagonist, though it is not the first time a different attorney has been playable. The game is set in the year 2026, which is seven years after Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations. Phoenix Wright has been stripped of his attorney's badge, and Apollo Justice, an up-and-coming attorney, becomes his apprentice.

The first and final cases of Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney are some of the best opening and closing cases in the series, but the two cases in the middle are less interesting. These are retroactively elevated somewhat after the final case though. Some parts of Apollo Justice are a bit finnicky. The third case plays a pre-rendered video far more than needed, and the mixer also from this case is a bit confusing to use at times. It's also sometimes necessary to present evidence when the evidence doesn't actually contradict what's being said but rather supplement it. I still have the same gripes with the system of moving from location to location as I did with the first three games as well. I was happy to see that the final trial alleviated this somewhat. Unfortunately the sprites in the Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy version of the game are poorly scaled in handheld mode, with visible pixelation. There are no noticeable issues in docked mode though. Generally, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney is good, and remains decent throughout. It definitely doesn't stoop to the lows of some of the previous games. The overarching mystery of the game is pretty intriguing, and kept me wanting to play more.
