.Hack//Infection is the first of a series of four games, titled .hack//Infection, .hack//Mutation, .hack//Outbreak, and .hack//Quarantine, features a "game within a game"; a fictional massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) called The World which does not require the player to connect to the Internet. Players may transfer their characters and data between games in the series. Each game comes with an extra DVD containing an episode of .hack//Liminality, the accompanying original video animation series which details fictional events that occur concurrently with the games. The games are part of a multimedia franchise called Project .hack which explores the mysterious origins of The World. Set after the events of the anime series .hack//Sign, the games focus on a player named Kite and his quest to discover why some users have become comatose as a result of playing The World. The search evolves into a deeper investigation of The World and its effects on the stability of the Internet.

It's been my favorite game since I got it back in like 2004, but it took until 2023 to actually beat all of the parts in the .hack//IMOQ tetralogy

A classic PS2 JRPG that I have been talking about streaming for a long time now, but which simply didn't live up to the memories I had of playing it back when it came out. Maybe gaming has just gotten better, or maybe my tastes have changed, but after roughly 8 hours of game play I can definitively say it just...didn't interest me. The voice acting is great, and the overall concept is well-executed, with the other "players" running the gamut from endearing to cringey. The best and worst thing about this game is how well it simulates the MMORPG experience...players will email you, toss emojis and spelling errors out in in-game text, and generally are just very believable as human players in an online game, rather than simply NPCs. The thing that killed this game for me, however, was the bad camera angles and general ugliness of the field and dungeon exploration sections, combined with poor combat mechanics which leave your characters with embarrassingly bad accuracy and attack power in the early game, even when fighting monsters at or below your level. Monsters move much faster than you do on the field, and getting hit by spells freezes you in place, so enemies can rapidly backpedal while stunlocking you with magic with depressing ease, or stagger their physical attack skills so you are unable to do anything but watch helplessly as they grind you down. To add insult to injury, most of the attacks and spells are visually unimpressive, and the SP costs of skills and magic means you will spend a lot of time slowly tapping X over and over while you wait for a "Data Bug" with an infinite HP bar to become vulnerable so you can Data Drain them. If you like slow-paced games with lots of grinding and a great story, this may be a hidden gem for you...but people accustomed to newer / more engaging combat will likely be disappointed.
